The magic smoke is really hard to put back in.
Better to just go drink some beers.....the more the better.

I will indulge in the nectar but I still gotta fix it.
Can't be that bad.
I mean it didn't burst into flames.

Rub your steering column, when the genie pop outs you get to make 3 wishs.

I would rather sit naked on a fire ant hill than trace down a dead short.
It's prolly your ignition switch.

Went thru that with the Rocket...the stink was the worst part...then finding a 70 ignition switch...NLA....ended up using a switch from a VW squareback or something.

hey man, that's serious...... mine caught on fire...... i had a short which caused the wiring to the ignition and blinker switches to first melt and then catch on fire. had to blast it with the extinguisher.....
hope it doesn't happen to you....
post extinguisher blast...
smoke came from where????
and the cause.....

You mean the smoke travelled all the way up the insulation into the steering column? Jeez.
Mike, I had no smell. Just a faint wisp of smoke. If that means anything.
This sucks.
Just got the car back from the mechanic for the SECOND time and now this....

Allan: When I think about it the switch can be replaced with a 71 bug switch.
Rustic Reds parts are interchangeable with Carerrors. Carerror has a VW key and ignition switch.

There are wires running up your steering collum. Friction from vibration can make the wires rub on themselves, wearing the jacket thin or off. This can cause an intermitant short. The switch going bad can cause the same thing, this would account for the smoke. I would sudjest that you address this ASAP.

If it's a switch like the one pictured, you should have no problem finding a replacement. It's the 70/71 switches (which are hard wired in) that are tough to find.

The car is a '74. I have a '76 parts car that still has the switch but no key.
Couldn't I just use it and get a key made?
