So thes are off the 1.7 that is the base for my 1911 build up.
Turns out the eng. recently got a rebuild as all the parts show to be
nearly new and fairly clean.

looking at them noticed they had peculiar squish lines,
closer inspection showed that the builder used multiple head
gaskets probably to adjust the CR?

does this occur due to head torque squeezing out the gasket?
Im sure multiple shims is a bad idea but does this occur evan with a single
gasket?

PM if interested.

The only reason i can come up with for the P.O. to used multiple head caskets is a warped hed or somethine like that. Why rase the commpression by using more than one. We need all the H.p. these engines can develop not less. Some people even remove the shims at the bottom of the cly. and lap them to the block to gain some compression.

Umm but wouldnt adding in this manner would LOWER CR by increasing combustion Volume?

^ Correct.
My guess, PO/builder didn't know you could use shims between the case and cylinders to set deck height.

I can't imagine a head gasket deforming like that if you only use one.

On the up side, it appears to have been sealing very well, and no messy sealants. Maybe we should all do it.

Leave 'em out and adjust the CR with base shims to 8.5 to 1 on that 1.7L.

One of mine was. And they were only stacked singlely. It was way out of whack and petruded into the combusion chamber big time

Did all cylinders have the double gaskets? thought maybe builder doubled up by accident on a single hole...?
