Well, I made it. I'll write up more later, but it was a singularly uneventful
trip! I'd guess I got about 31 mpg, I will calculate it later. The only issue
was that the car stalled in San Antonio traffic, and took about a minute to restart.
Had me worried, but it started again!

Now starts the process of figuring out exactly what I bought, and start fixing things!
I have a list of about 20 items, most of them need work, not money. I'll be asking
for a lot of help as I do this.

One of the first things is the fuel injection system. It starts okay cold, but still
misses a lot, generally <3000 rpm. It's also falling through and stalling on decel.
Gotta change the muffler too, way too loud. Gotta look for a 1.7 liter muffler.

Well, the fun is just starting! I'm hgappy to be home so I can work on the car!

Thanks to all that I met on my trip, the Rt 66 guys (too many to remember), and
especially Greg Robbins, who gave me a bed and an awesome meal Sunday
night!

More later....

Jeff

Excellent. I'm glad you made it home without any major problems. It was great to meet you in Prescott. Thanks so much for going out of you way on your long journey to come and play with us on the R66C.

Now - get busy on the car. You need to have it ready for the drive to the WCC in Portland. biggrin.gif

I'm not sure about a return trip, John. Maybe in a little while! I've got to digest
this one first! That drive through the mountains was worth the price of admission
though! It's free from now on. I may go part way to the RRC. I've got so much
work ahead of me though!

Thanks again for all your kindnesses!

Joe, be prepared for a long list of questions in a day or so. You told me too much in too short a time to digest it all!

I have a stock 1.7 muffler you can have for free, I have no use for it. Where in Texas are you?

BTW, what muffler do you have now? If it's a bursch I'd be interested in it. wink.gif

I may have one that will at least get you started. it has some surface rust but no holes, and it seems to be in pretty good shape. I know you down south. The question is how far? I am in the northeast panhandle area. Let me know what you think and I can email you some pics.
BTW Glad to hear the trip was somewhat uneventful.

Ear plugs help a lot!! Just mellow out and aim, no steering required. Just think and you're there.

Jeff, congrats on the new-to-you wheels! I know right where you're coming from with the questions, the overwhelmedness, and the excitement, as I just did a simlar fly/drive, albeit a shorter one than yours I suspect. The people here are fantastic and instrumental to our (hopeful) success.

So let me give you a hearty welcome.png and a heartier thisthreadisworthlesswithoutpics.gif

Welcome home Jeff. Now I can get some sleep. I have had my fingers crossed for three days. I had done the best I could preparing that car for your long trip, as you know. But it’s still a 31-year-old classic, I was happy to see that you had prepared yourself as well with some needed tools. You’re a really nice guy and I welcome you with your second 914.
I wont you to know you where not the only one putting in 400 miles today. I went up to Napa CA, to pick up this little gem. 75 1.8 Runs like a champ.

Took 3 1/2 tanks, but I went from sea to shining Gulf (of Mexico)! Texas is BIG.
Took me 30 hours driving in three days, including a side trip to play in the twisties!

Gulf of Mexico... Does that mean you live like near Houston or sumpin.
We need to get together for and Autocross in Houston.

Jeff,
Glad you made it back with to real problems. When I bought my teener the PO said I should be able to drive it back from MN to central IL. I thought about it but borrowed a trailer and pulled it home. Once I got it here and started driving it I found that it would not have made it. Carbs were all screwed up and it had a bent front rim (or WAY out of balance). The work the PO did on the rest of the car was outstanding.

Hi Joe,

Just catching up after a week! I buy a car, primarily because of this board, and
as soon as I get it back home, the board dies! No fun, and major withdrwal
symptoms!

I live in Rockport, a little city just North of Corpus Christi. Houston is about four
hours North of me. I plan to come up to Houston once I get the car running
again. I think the trip was pretty hard on it. I solved one problem, and am
working on the others. All appear to be vacuum leaks (L-Jet, what else!).

I'd like to try an autocross one day. I plan the car as a daily driver, not a race
car, but it might be fun! It doesn't look like nuch, but I hope it is sound
mechanically! I'll be slow, but it will be interesting to compete.

I'll be watching for mentions of events in Houston as time goes on here.
Appreciate the "hello"!

Ok, ok! I told you tomorrow, but the site died first!! If it stays up, really
tomorrow!!! I have shots of the nothingness of the desert, a WalMart parking lot,
and pictures of the dead not running right engine. Should be exciting!

Hey Jeff - glad to see you made it home safely! It was really cool that you showed up in Prescott. We'll be excited to see you come back with it after you've gotten some projects done!

Okay, boring trip recap.

This was as uneventful as a 914 trip could be!

I left Tujunga heading East around noon. I was planning to
hang around the area, but I couldn't hook up with anybody, so
I decided to start home.

A little while into the drive, I adjusted the rear view mirror and
ended up having it fall off in my hand. It was a great start, huh?
It's a little scary driving with only a little outside mirror in a car I'm
not used to!

I went by the biggest wind farm I've ever seen! The ones in Texas are
a lot smaller!

I stopped for gas in Indio, $3.599 per gallon. I assume the water was no charge,
the car started missing right after that. It only missed at about 3000 rpm
though, so I just drove faster. With 195/50's on the car, it really wasn't that fast.

I also stopped for a cooler and some Coke. Nice looking car in the parking lot...
Oops, that one's mine!

I finally decided to see if I could find the Route 66 Classic. I vaguely remembered
the name of the motel and the town, Prescott. I got there at 7:15 PM, and
everyone had left for dinner at 7:00. So, I bought a six pack and waited. Two
beers later a 911ish car pulled up. It was Howard in his 996! I asked him if he
was one of them 914 guys, and he reluctantly admitted it. I introduced myself
and told him my story. I also met Joe Sharp. They both thought I was crazy
for taking a car cross country without having them check it out for me. Of course,
they WERE is Arizona! Anyway, I met the rest of the gang, and got a room for the night.

jd66921
Sunday I drove with the group. I love this car. It doesn't look like much, misses,
and doesn't idle very well right now, but the drive down the mountains was worth
every penny spent! No pictures, I was too busy! I was wary of the snap
oversteer as I had that happen to my old car 30 years before, but no problems!

I stayed with Greg and Susan Robbins Sunday night. Greg and I did a little work
on the car to try to make it better. We didn't really suceed, but...

Monday I drove about 700 miles. I thought it would be harder, but I had no problems.
The 914 is so stable and tracks so well that I found it pretty
effortless. It was loud, so I used earplugs or my portable radio to deaden the
sounds. Pretty mellow with no sound at all! Just me and the road!! Not a lot to
see

but there 's a lot of it!

Got to Fort Stockton Monday night!

jd66921
Fort Stocton to Corpus Christi is only 450 miles, but it was hot and humid. I
expected it to be hotter in the desert! Pretty easy ride though. I just stopped a
couple of times. In San Antonio, it stalled in heavy traffic and took a few
seconds to restart but other than that, it was fine

Rest area in West Texas or Hill Country, I forget

Looks pretty good from a distance

I got home about 4:30 and pulled the car under the house (my house is raised 10
feet). The car won't idle, and now after I "fixed" it, will only barely run! I've been
working on it every day since, with no luck yet. I don't think it is serious, but
what do I know. I've learned more in a week about fuel injection!

Looks okay here, but up close it's rather shabby. But the dents are fixable and
there's always a lot of body work to do to. No flex, no holes, surface rust only
in the trunks.

Looks like There was AC at one time? May have to put one back in one day. It
gets HOT here

So, I'm happy. Or I will be when I get it running again. Anyone want a vacation
on the sunny Texas coast? We've got beaches, a boat in the water behind the
house. Good redfish and speckled trout fishing! You just need to know how to fix
an L-Jet!!
