A bunch of you have very nice cars that I'm dying to find out the weight of...

Right now? Gee, I'd take a guess and say that my car weighs in around something like 1500-1600 lbs...

Oh yeah, there's no seats or carpet, no rear window, and no engine or transmission, yet... biggrin.gif

But I'll be getting the car on some scales as soon as it's done and running. I'm hoping something in the neighborhood of 1950-2000 lbs in fighting trim.

I can't wait to find out
that would be a nice weight for a fully stock-legal car
I think you can get it...
can't wait to hear the results

Also got rid of the pass seat & adjuster goodie.....maybe 10 lbs tops. 1831 & dropping.
I can see the 17xxs in my future....less windshield, dash & asociated shittage.
The upper section of the cage is also in the crosshairs.
Then....I have a selection of hole saws...I also see E Mod in my future huh.gif

I know the ones down here at the dump are accurate within 20#'s.
Sometimes I'll be weighing in or out and the scale will teeter back and forth between xx20-xx40, for example.

Within 20#'s is good enough for me for "just knowing".

Corner balance- Whole different thread. wink.gif

With my tires... flares... long kit.... and bondo?

somewhere around 2400..

Note that each wheel and tire combo is around 50lb on the back.. and a measly 40lb on the front..

(thats street though) With goodyear slicks and cookie cutters, im sure I'd shave 50-100lbs...

Heck... I'd like to get it under 2k..

Anyone think I can do it? its only 350lbs..
race914

Currently at 1980lbs with 1/4 tank and no driver.

Still have stock trunk lid, headlight motors, full interior, etc.

Next project is fiberglass trunk lid/spoiler.
brokenmoped
Never had the chance to weigh mine...

1974 2.0, front and rear sway bar, koni red all 4, 140lb springs, 2.0 fuchs, FG hood, rear lid, roof, front bumper and rear bumper, all sound deadening stripped, no radio, full interior, both seats, and a rollbar...

I'm guessing around ~1900. Anyone have a better guestimate?

Does anyone know the "actual" weight savings, using Lexan windows?
I have been considering it. Comments?

Windows is for computers, not race cars biggrin.gif
Actually, I do still have a front window, but if you turn your back, it may be gone.

Some time back there was a thread on the garage on plexiglass windshields and a link to a supplier. The plastic windshield was about 400 bucks and the weight savings was around 15-20 lbs.....not too bad.

here is my opinion on why NOT truck scales.
Scales are calibrated to be accurate within a certain range.
When i worked in a grain warehouse we used to have the state inspector come in and recalibrate and certify our scales regularly... If you overloaded a scale that was designed to weigh an 80lb bag, it would potentially throw off the calibration.

same thing if you drove a 10,000 lb truck onto a 3,000lb corner balancing car scale. Probably ruin it.

for the same reason a truck scale is calibrated to work accurately with a 20,000 truck. It IS NOT going to be very accurate at 2,000 lbs. It might be 1% off but that is 200lbs difference at 1%.

The truck scale at the dump is probably not even regularly calibrated
if it is even calibrated it is being used outside of its operating range.
If you want to guess within 200 lbs.. thats fine... but I personally don't trust truck scales and would much rather hear about accurate and repeatable numbers.

Hey Brant, all that sun in La Junta must have cooked yer noggin a bit. 1% of 2,000 lbs is 20 lbs,, not 200... biggrin.gif

Still, truck scales are not going to be very accurate for a 2,000 lb car.

I was thinking 1% of a 20,000 truck...
meaning that the truck may be off by 200lbs and they (the dump or D.O.T.) probably don't care about that amount.
I didn't do a very good job of making my point.
brain was going in 2 directions at once.

I theorize that the scales are way more than 1% from accurate, when used outside of their given range...

All you rocket scientists at NCAR probably know more about this than I.
what do you think Josh..
aren't scales designed to only be accurate within a range?

brant
jhadler
All calibrated devices are generally calibrated to work within a range that they are designed to be used for. You wouldn't use a bathroom scale to weigh a letter that you're sending by mail?

Granted, the wight of a 2,000 lb car is a lot closer to the range of use of a truck scale than a letter is to a bathroom scale. But it's likely that the scale is not calibrated for use at that low a weight. What does it mean? It -could- mean that your measurement is waaaay off. It could also mean that your measeurement is spot on. There's no way to know.

If I just wanted to know -roughly- how much my car weighed, a truck scale would tell me fine. But if I'm trying to make minimum weight for a competition class, the truck scale is likely to land me in the impound shed, with a protest sheet on the window...

And even then, corner scales will only be accurate if they're properlly setup and calibrated.

weighed mine at joe sharps house. 1 gallon of fuel, and no front bumper...

1908 lbs. all metal....

The scales at our dump weigh a wide variety of vehicles.
Little mini econo-cars with a small load in the trunk to the largest triple axled trailered dumping big-rigs.

It's pay by wieght.
Wiegh in . Wiegh out. Every 20# is theirs. wink.gif

I hope somebody is regulating them.

Anyway...I'll post my real wieght after I get on some car scales.

I need to go down to the roundy round shop and have them give me a baseline. Then I can record everything I take off and put back on. Hopefully keep track for a few more years.

Those scales dont need to be accurate (they only need to be precise - look up the difference;). Heck, they only need to be repeatable - they can be 500lb off going in as long as they are the same 500lb off going out. Truck scales aren't accurate...

Swapped out my 37.5 pound steel hood for a 11.1 pound fiberglass version.

Swapped out my 35.5 pound steel trunk lid for a 11.1 pound fiberglass version.

~50 pound weight save.

Now, I'm sitting at 1650 with no fuel or driver.

Dang... Kevin....

that is awesome!
