so, after seeing two of the major search engines being frequent visitors here, i did a quick search for our very own special version of the current forum software ...

search string i used:

Our hacker wasn't specifically targetting the 914 board, but rather board running a particular version of the Invision software. That is, they have a particular hack that's known to work on Invision version X. Since the version number appears on the site, you can search for it with Google, and find all boards running Invision version X, and thus build a list of target boards to attack.

Since there is no hack for Invision version 9.1.4, they won't find our board using this simple attack.

It's very likely the hacker didn't even know they were attacking the 914club board, they only knew they were attacking a series of boards running the same version of the software.

So, this simple change has made us a bit safer, though we won't be completely safe until the Invision software really is secure from attack. Whether our version is secure or not is a matter of conjecture.

I set up a website about 6 months ago and STILL can't get it to show up on a google search. Guess I need to send them a check or something. I heard that one must pay money to have a site show up on a google search.

Our site gets picked up BIG TIME. (harmony-central.com) We have so many people link to your site and that's one of the big keys for ranking. We're also a content site and we're loaded with key words relevant to any music search...

Now, what you have to ask is; why does "The 914 Fan Web Page" outrank the club when you type 914. When you type Porsche 914 it's even worse.

I would think we have more content than any of those sites unless... spiders don't crawl forum threads... that would make sense. In which case, we ought to take some of the classic threads and convert them to html docs or even text docs that reside on the site much like what is compiled in the "914 Info" section. Not sure what the answer is.

that is *exactly* the answer ... spiders have trouble indexing the forums because some of the links to the content pages are dynamic, so the spider can't follow them ...

dumping static pages every night or so in a "contanier" that is accessible trough a direct link from the homepage (can even be hidden for normal users) would solve that problem ...
