sorry folks, but my gallery is the only way to quickly post 42 pics without resizing them or doing anything to them.
A little less work for me, a little more for you, but you get the option for having a slideshow AND you're able to see them in 1024x768

oh and welds are for STRENGTH and not BEAUTY.
That is/was the gameplan...
I don't care what anyone has to say about my welds. I take full responsibility for the lack of pretty welds.

i hope you sprayed the inside of that long with half a gallon of metal ready ...
you don't want any of the rust to eat through the new metal from the inside out ...

OKAY,
click my link, and click on any picture....from there, when looking at the single picture, you can post a comment about it like, "Woah dude, this is nuts, you should have thrown that away" or something like that.
Dont get carried away though, I dont wanna have to delete text-based goat porn or anything....

Nice. You had a lot more to cut out then I did. And obviously can weld faster then I can. I think that I am the worlds slowest welder. Hopefully by the end of the week my hell hole wil be patched. Then I finish my frint trunk patches. Then I am move on to stripping the car of paint to find more rust. :-)

got home safe and sound. That was soooo much fun! lol, I have more pics, but need to resize them. It looks like you guys got a lot done after we left... It rained most of the way home...looked in the rear trunk of the 914 and there really was at least five gallons of water! more than when it rained at your house. There has to be something else other than that taillight seal that is leaking... anyway....Maybe in another five years we can fix your car again! just pack some mud on all the new stuff, and fill it with water for a while..dont worry, it wont take long.

two common rear trunk leaks:
- the "channel". if the rear trunk seal does not sit tight against the hood, water can build up in the channel and get in between the seal and the hood ...
- rusted through corners of the fender, right above the tail lights. the factory foam in the fender tends to trap moisture and they rust through there. driving in the rain will throw *a lot* of water in that corner, which will simply seep through into your trunk ...

so, you put silver por-15 right over the rust without using metal ready first? inside the long? then welded it shut?
if so, you'll be re-doing your fix in a year or two when it starts rusting from the inside out ...

Actually it still works and works well. From what I understand, Por 15 was not at first designed for a 2 part system, Metal Ready came out after to compliment the system, and it works 100X better. Now its become a 2 part. The North Ameriacan warehouse is a short drive from the shop, I used to shoot the shit with the owner.
You guys are the bomb, thats a lot of fricken work in a very short time, and with a buget.
OT - Grasshopper, sorry to ask, how old are you?

Occording to POR-15, the rust preventative paint works because it seals out moisture from ever getting to the metal. But they also highly advocate the use of their metal ready... So who knows

Jun 5 2006, 07:11 PM
The stuff we used was not Por 15. It was more of a rust encaspsulator. Clean the metal and apply. The inside of the long was in good condition. When Britt finishes welding car should last quite a while. Britt dont forget seam sealer and paint everything.

there wasn't much rust in the long itself. Just a little surface rust. It should last a long time.
Grrrr.... we found the devil hanging around in hell...

QUOTE(Hammy @ Jun 5 2006, 05:40 PM)
So who knows
i do ...
we did the back to back test ...
POR-15 over a rusted surface (cleaned off lose stuff first):
- rust was back after about 1 year, ate through from the inside out
Metal-Ready first, wash off excess, let dry, then POR-15 to seal:
- 3 years later still no sign of rust
Andy
PS: metal ready is what actually chemically changes the rust and creates a "coating". POR-15 is what keeps the water away from the metal.
POR-15 directly applied over surface rust will *not* stop the rust as it does *not* chemically bond with the rust. it does, however, absorb moisture while drying ...

Jun 6 2006, 10:10 AM
BUT, it traps out the moisture to prevent further rusting of the area. His was not pitted either, it was just VERY light surface rust that you could pretty much wipe off with you finger. We cut out all of the bad stuff.

just don't drive the car in the rain or snow, that's what I do. maybe thats a luxury....

BTW, if this was a CA car, it would have been cut apart years ago.
My car is three 914s pieced together, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Cut me some slack.

Yeah, I didnt want to re-open the long, so I sprayed it into the long through the little screwholes along the long.
A little bit is better than none.

Hey Britt
If you are still worried about it, get a couple spray cans of "rustcheck" and using the straw, shoot it in the holes and try to get everywhere posibble.
This stuff migrates, and does a realy good job. But be warned, in the sun the stuff likes to leach out and needs to be washed more often, small price to pay for year round fun. Unfortunately I live in the salt belt, and these type of products are a must.

I cant take any credit for any of this stuff....I learned from very VERY good and patient teachers
Didnt reach my goal of taking it to the VW meet tonight, but I will get it done shortly.
Frank, Where do you find this stuff? At a auto acessories store(like bumper to bumper--very good.) or elsewhere? AutoZone/NAPA/CarQuest?
