Can the 3 hose fuel pump from a 74 914 be replaced with 2 hose pump from a 75-76 914 or a bus??? If so, what do you do with the 'damper' hose?

Yes you can use this pump. Supply from tank goes into pump. Out put from one way
valve into fuel rail. Return from fuel pressure regulator into what you call a damper,
to tank. Dimitri

There is no "damper" hose. The three ports on the early fuel pump are labeled S, D, R; they stand for Suction (or rather the German equivalent), Druck (which is German for "pressure"), and Return (or the German equivalent). (Yeah, I'm too lazy to look up the actual words. So sue me!)

The "S" hose gets connected to the fuel tank by way of the fuel filter. The "D" hose gets connected to the fuel rail, as it provides pressure to the fuel rails. The "R" hose gets connected to a Y connector, one arm of which goes to the fuel tank and the other of which comes from the fuel pressure regulator. The excess fuel is dumped through this hose and goes back to the tank.

The later pumps do not have an "R" fitting, so you eliminate the Y connector. Run the return straight from the FPR to the fuel tank.

"Damper" is either an incorrect assumption from the "D" label, or a leftover on one of the diagrams from a non-914 application.

It's what the Haynes 914 manual says.

So is there any reason why one pump is better than the other? If one had the option of picking and choosing, would a '74 pump be preferable to a '75?

The '75-'76 is cheaper in price.
