I have been using avast for a few years now. Free (a good thing) and automatically updates the virus table every time it is connected to the internet (a VERY good thing). I have to update the program manually, but it notifies when an update is available.

I use Trend Micro's online virus scanner
Housecall, and Microsoft's
Windows Defender.

Personally...free anti spam, spyware, and anti virus is worth what you pay for it....in most cases.
The new Microlimp anti spy program is good....the Trend and Spy Sweeper have kept my system safe for years....BTW...the nastiest site I ever ran across was on my kid's computer....it was a cartoon based site....ass deep in every nasty virus, imbedded spyware and cookies from hell.
It seems that I am the defacto sysop at my home and I am the give it to Mikey guy at the office to see if I can break it.....

I agree a Mac rocks but on Windows I use:
Norton AV Corporate version (if you have a friend who works in IT, it's much better than the consumer version).
Zone Alarm Firewall - free version - you kind of need to know what you are doing when it blocks stuff you didn't expect it to block. At minimum turn on XP's firewall if have XP.
Spybot Search and Destroy - free version
With the triple threat cocktail I've never been hit with any virus or spyware on Windows.
