okay guys - ya know how you need to put something really outrageous on your Christmas list so that pricey item you -really- want doesn't look so bad by comparison ?

here's your list-topper - the (i kid you not) $6500 tool cabinet (on sale now - $300 off, "only" $6299(!).

i'm sorry - it would be a really hard sell in my household buying a tool cabinet that cost more than the friggin' 911 !

I saw a really nice stainless rolling tool chest at Costco for $650 - way better than anything you'd see at Sears. I would even consider buying it if it wasn't so freaking heavy. I try not to buy things I can't move by myself plus it might even be cheaper to make one out of wood.

I've got that box. It's very nice! I can't tell you how great of a deal it is!

the stainless ones -are- nice. and while i lived in the desert i'm not sure i'd have felt the stainless was a big deal. now that i'm living in the swamp, my opinions are changing :-) ...

but can the red thing -really- be *ten times* nicer !? i dinno - i'm a big Costco shopper but i am having a BIG problem seeing the value in this thing ... i know Griot's has some FACOM stuff that's in this price range so maybe Costco believes the high-water mark on cost has already been set ...

i have almost (but not quite) outgrown the Sears rolling cabinet i bought on sale for a couple-hundred bucks 20 years ago, so i'm on the lookout for something that can complement that with some of the more specialised tools i'm getting into now. i don't think this will be it...

oh - i just moved that tool cabinet 3000 mi by using some ratchet tiedowns to fasten it to the side rail of a big UHaul truck. and while it was heavy enough that it took two of us really working at it to get it up the ramp (sucker's HEAVY fully loaded) it survived a very bumpy move just fine - something few of the wood chests, bureaus, and cabinets did - and they were empty...

i understand. but IF there is a performance advantage to be had (no data yet) and IF i can plug 'em in and forget about them for a year (no data yet) i think it'll be money well spent. also - i'm somehow less opposed to being $75 extravagent than $7500 extravagent...

I have a buddy with that stainless Costco box - has roller bearing drawers and everything is nicely finished. VERY worth the price if you have enough tools to warrant it.

I was checking it out. It did seem very nice - like 10 times better than even the best stuff Sears sells for 30-40% more.

Sean, how heavy is that thing when you separate the two parts? Can one person lift the smaller top box? Can tow people comfortably lift the larger bottom piece without throwing out their backs?

One of my techs has that box, it could be considered small compared to what else is out there. A guy in our body shop has the grand daddy of SnapOn boxes, it had to be delivered on a flatbed.
Nine feet long, stainless steel top, eight spring loaded wheels, 1300 pounds..... $12.595.00 !!!
We joke about what shortcoming these guys are trying to compensate for.

Two of us loaded in my suv. I got it out myself (yeah for gravity). It took two of us to put it together without scratching it to hell.
One person may be able to do it, but it won't be easy at all. It doesn't take long to fill a box like that. I've got no empty drawers left.
Not every one is 100% full, but everything is organized and easy to get to.

I'll shoot a couple pics when I get back from the ramble if anyone is interested. It cost under $700 all said and done.
I looked at Craftsman boxes before I finally decided on this box. This is built much better and feels so much nicer. The drawers have a ball catch that keeps them closed. It works very well.
I would compare this box to mac, matco or snap-on of the same size.

I've seen a SS box at Lowes or HD but only the front and sides were SS. The drawers were steel.
Buyer beware.

I like the boxes with the built in sound systems. Why not get one of them big ass pit carts like the NASCAR fellas use.

I have a buddy with one that size (or almost that size) Snap-on, with the side hang on cabnet. With tools in it he figures it's worth $20K (His wife dosen't know that)

haha, yeah my brother was not one, but two huge snap-on boxes. I think the latest one was $8k. he moves them around on a flat bed tow truck. they are sweet looking though, the electric blue color.

not very space effective- where do you put all your tools? you dont need 6 inch tall droors for sockets and wrenches do you?

You use the 6' tall drawers for putting your hammers in. But first you have to buy the $100 hammer racks.

Some of the sockets I have are about 5" tall. (3/4 drive).

My buddy put in a $12,000 alarm system in a high end shop. Half of that cost was aimed at the owners box and it looked a lot like that one!
