I just stumbled across one of the early 1970 rear bumpers with the sharp license plate cut-out and didn't really know much about it. can anyone tell me more about these early bumpers? why did they change the design after only a year? are they rare? any info would be great, thanks!

I think they made them two years.

nope - only MY 1970 had these

AFAIK the sharp edge rear bumper was only available in chrome

the factory changed them to the rounder version because they had serious trouble with the chroming at the sharp edges

due to the short production they are really rare

about the only thing missing is that the early /6 guys get a hard on for them and late /6 cars get "knocked" for not having one by folks that don't know that not all /6s don't have that bumper...nothing too special except just a limited run bumper that was modified for ease of manufacture as most people have guessed.....and it can fetch more money than a later bumper...installed on /4's as well as the early /6's....

another tidbit....rear bumpers get replaced often and when the supply of "correct" bumpers was NLA from the dealers they were replaced with the newer style. Now rare...the Concour Weenies get goose bumps when they see one....

Are we absolutely sure it was 70 only? The 71 we parted out had one on it. Maybe it was just a leftover?

The early bumper I took off the Red Neck Racer was pretty light. I was sort of like "wow that's light"
Probably only saved a few pounds with the glass one.
Early steel one I have is painted black If anyone is interested.
I need to start moving parts out of my garage.

I wonder if they just used what was left over because I've seen '71s with the early bumper too.

I'm not the man who can proof things that happend more than 35 yrs ago
but I do know that many things can happen in 35 yrs

I remember the long discussion with Dave Fagan about the rear bumper of DGU914H - he was absolutely sure that his /6 has got the correct bumper (the "round" one), but I was able to proof that the car was delivered with the old style rear bumper ...

well, I can't proof every single case, but in general only the MY'70 cars were delivered with the sharp edges bumpers

imagine following - in Sep 1970 you drive your MY'71 car and hit something with your chromed, "new" version rear bumper; you let your Porsche dealer replace it and they have a MY'70 leftover sharp edge rear bumper; hardly anybody would notice it ... and so, 35 yrs later some guys think that's stock

other story - someone who has a 914 with early style chrome rear bumper does a conversion to FG bumpers and stores away his chrome bumpers; after a long time in the back yard they're rusty and ugly and he decides to scratch them down to bare metal and paint them in a "stock" colour, because re-chroming would be too expensive ... and so we have an "original" painted early style rear bumper


see what I mean?
nobody can tell us for sure what definitely happend within the last 35 yrs - me neither
but at least we know what the "standard procedure" was - and so we can assume what's stock and what's not

if you have a early chrome bumper, sell it to the C weenie guys to put on their cars so they can be "correct". Thats all they are good for these days IMHO
