well it wasn't the carbs. still not much control with the i/a mixture screw. popped the appropriate valve cover and it looked like flakes of gold with a few tiny nuggets. prior to...while the engine was running and i covered up either of the venturies the engine would stumble a bit but continue to run. not so when i performed the same move on the other carb. i could also hear the sound of some vaccum leak. i removed the oil fill cap and there was chugging sound and little puffs of smoke would come out, sort of like an old time locomotive. my guess is i'm lossing 1 valve guide completely. the other one in the same head may be severely on the way out too. the bottom edge of the gasket almost looked burnt and the other one has a damn fine leak. excessive crank case pressure/heat due to the failing guide(s)? thoughts? oh, the shinny on the gasket is the gold.

Not sure if you have a six or a four.
A four...

that could be valve guides...loosen the rocker arms...wiggle the top of the valve side to side...

You will find the loose one. If its the guide, fix it now before you damage the rest of the head...a loose valve could beat on the seat,,loosen it and then you get a dropped valve etc...

If there is no other damage you could fix it in a day. Drop engine and pull head,

pop out valve, press out guide, press in new guide, yada yada.

Dood! Thank GOD it didn't take the seat on that hell ride though Pistonvania!

that was the second thought last night mark. kinda interesting. the engine that is in the car came out of a total. it was installed (used) by david said in 5-96. soab still runs. just no hill power.

jeanne and i will be stylin' in the ford escort.

What about Jean's red 75?
DNHunt
If you are in the mood I can stick Old Smokie in the trailer and bring it by this morning. I think all it needs is exhaust, intake and dizzy

Dave

when i pulled the valve cover i knew the old smoker needed to be euthanized. the 75' is a longer story. i'm lazy. thanks dave but i'll have to pass on smokey. make sure betsy knows you'll be blocking some time to wrench on the 2056 wink.gif. if i had known the REAL problem was NOT the carbs, and i had not been wating for them...anyway,... jeanne was surprised i was so calm about the whole situation last night. no swearing. no pacing in the garage while smoking like a chimney. i didn't even throw a single wrench. a new plateau of 914 ownership. sometimes i wonder if these cars are really worth it.

major garage/shop clean up today. i'm not up to a 24 hour blitz to stuff in one of the other engines (used), hoping the car will make the tour in portland. i'll be prioritizing next week and be making some big desissions.

k
DNHunt
Take it easy man. We'll see you down there.
Root_Werks
A top end doesn't sound bad at all. More just the timing of events that sucks. You'll get it all squared away. It all just takes time.
rhodyguy
odd. i would have thought there would have some other indicator than the power loss. no "bad" noises. no catastrophic failure, which is better than a kablooey on mt hood. stash contains a set of in spec euro 2.0 pistons and i have the "onion" big valve heads freshened up by nwcr. you're right dan, the timing is poor. i guess the car is just telling me "don't try to drive me to portland. you'll be sorry". jeanne is pumped about the 06'. so am i. after all, it's "about the people". i've warned her about getting lost in the vortex of joe sharp's motor home. we will need to bum some rides for the parade lap.

craig, do you have anything for a faithful, nonpaid employee?

Craig may have a car you could take on the tour. I think he is planning to take his "Cayenne" and a dolly, kind of like the guy with the shovel and wagon at the end of a parade.
I no longer have a 914 to drive either, but I'm touring in my wife's car.
Yellow six is still in the garage, but bought and paid for, so not mine.
Have a deposit on the Bumble Bee but might just drive it Friday anyway.
boxstr
Kevin You would do us all proud if you would headup the parade lap for the 914club in your FORD ESCORT.av-943.gif
