Another and a story:

QUOTE
July 1st, 2006

Today was going to be great, the wing was due @ 8AM and I was set to take a day off work and run out to San Francisco to pick it up. I'll mention that I don't drive my truck much, other then running back and forth to the hardware store, the dumps, etc… So I set out early to avoid the heat and right off I realize that I don't have much gas in the tank, actually just fumes so I grab an empty gas can just in case and head down the mountain to the gas station (about 7-8 miles). And what do you know but I make it without incident, must be my lucky day! While refueling I notice a penny just under my fuel tank, so I pick it up- you know for “good luck”. So I’m now off to SF to pick up the wing. Armed with Map Quest driving directions, phone confirmation that the wing has arrived, and of course my good luck penny. This is where it gets good; so I’m following a cab headed to SF and taking his time about it. I pass him and think nothing of it; next thing you know he’s in front of me again and all of a sudden out of nowhere a large chunk of wood, metal, who knows what comes out from under the cab (we’re traveling at least 65MPH at this point) and smacks the front of my truck. I didn’t realize how heavy the object was until that point. So I shake it off and count my lucky stars that the thing didn’t fly up into my windshield. It’s scary how quick things can happen at speed. So 5-10-15 minutes pass and no signs of trouble. Now I’m in SF and struggling with the Map Quest directions when I realize that Map Quest has directed me right into the worst part of town- the projects. After a few minutes it’s clear that I’m nowhere near the port of SF and then all of a sudden I catch a whiff of antifreeze, then again, now I’m starting to panic, I’m really in danger if I break down in this part of town. So I speed out of the area as quick as possible hoping that I’m just lost. 2 minutes later there’s steam rising out from under my hood. I scramble hoping to find a place to park or better yet a gas station or repair shop. 2 minutes pass and the radiator dumps its remaining coolant all over the 76 gas station parking lot that I just pulled into.

Long story short- $494 and 2 hours later I’m back out looking for the depot again. Still lost and now I’m hearing a loud exhaust noise, louder, louder, and now I’m hearing something scrapping under the truck- did I mention I’m lost again and back in the projects. So I find a safe place to pull over (next to an abandoned car and 100 yards from the closest bum or drug-addict), I look under the truck and the freaking muffler is hanging by a thread, I can’t believe it, it ain’t my day. So I climb under the truck kick the muffler a couple of times until it falls to the ground, I quickly jump in the truck and race the hell out of there. In hindsight it was pretty funny- I ran over the muffler as I sped away under full exhaust note. At that point I decided that it was time to "get out of Dodge" and I headed for the freeway. I was bummed, after all that, still no wing. It took me 1.5 hours to get home; luckily I didn’t get a ticket for the open exhaust.

So that’s how I described my day to my wife as I drove home. To my surprise and amazement she was able to borrow a truck from a co-worker and secretly headed out to the depot to pick up my wing. I couldn’t believe it, she had it home within an hour after I arrived in the battle mobile. I am a lucky guy- maybe that’s what the penny represented? smile.gif

So we opened and unloaded the crate- nice job BTW building that crate. The wing looks better then I expected so at the end of the day I was happy.

So that’s the story about picking up the wing now take a look at how I mounted the wing to the car. It took four trips to Pick-n-Pull before I had the correct hinges to mount the wing the way I wanted it. I am still fine tuning the mounting and plan on a very large air vent across the rear deck/engine cover. You’ll see some early planning with the black tape on the deck lid. I hope to have the deck lid functional by next weeks BBQ.

Over and out,

Chris

BTW, Chris gives high props to "Spare Time Toys" for selling, packing, and shipping the AIR wing. clap56.gif Props to Chris' "better half", Shirley. pray.gif

Do your GM cars have their shots? I wouldnt want my purebred to catch something nasty. biggrin.gif ....Like a case of creeping primer or fender flarieitis.

That is around the corner from my house...can I bring the 1.7?

The local 2-day autoX school is that day, so anyone who is a student or an instructor there won't be able to make it. Not sure how much cross-over there is from that population to the swap-happy population, though.

It's unlikely I'm going to be able to make this one - sorry... I've used my quota of events up with the WCC - gotta look after the kid some smile.gif

Trevor,

Sure but Mike's place has limited parking if "everyone" showed up. Send your email for an Evite.
Andyrew
Felix.. you know the likelyhood of that... lol

I think 10 cars max, probably 5 or 6.. but a lot of guys without rides (just a hunch)

Andyrew
Oh, and Chris...

The wing is almost big enough for the flares!

Looks good!!! Worth the trouble and the story IMHO (but I didnt go through it! smile.gif)

You may be right but in the past (not when you were running) there have been cars that unexpectantly showed. smile.gif

Here's a 911 twin turbo that unfortunately that will not be there because the owner has a life threatening medical issue. sad.gif And he REALLY wanted to attend...
Andyrew
Wow, thats a shame he wont be there, The craftmanship looks amazing! Hope he gets better!

Felix... If my dad cant come (he's in the hospital now... small blood poisioning.. he stepped on ceramic glass) then I'll be with a friend.. I've got to ask my uncle if he'll let me borrow his tow. My engine doesnt like me, and im sure my cv's are getting bad again... (just blowing them till the 915 goes in... then I'll fab some adapters for the bus axles) So I dont wana chance it.

But... I'll be there!

Fiid, Sorry you cant come... Love to get a ride in your car, and vice versa!

I might drive a 944...

But im coming...

Harry's driving back from Thunder Hill today, talk about heat and distance!

my 914 is out. headbang.gif Things were looking up Wed when I fired it up for the first time but I had to finish wiring the fuel pump in the cabin, replace the shifter coupling bushings, rewire the starter, and a myriad of other things. My fuel regulator won't meter lower than 10 PSI and I read it should be 4-5. confused24.gif

If it were only tuning the engine or adjusting the shifter I would have limped it or Jon would have towed it to the BBQ but I found a fuel leak under the tank right at the hose in the tunnel. ohmy.gif I'm not even sure how to get to it but I need to dry or evacuate the fuel. I worked on it as long as I could with the strong fumes.

To top it off one of my Benz's window decided not to raise so I spent an hour removing the motor. Oh well, old or modified cars have their quirks. Dam I was really close to running and the engine sounded great!

Andyrew
Felix... Just bring a random box of stuff your planning to use for the Neo....

lol

That will get us Oooing and Ahhing for hours.....

The killer is I haven't had much time for neo914 working on the V8, I really need to get this drivable and out of my single garage. wacko.gif Maybe in time for next week's breakfast idea.gif

BTW, I just spoke to Harry and he said he nearly passed out driving home from ThunderHill yesterday. He has no rear window and top so he was hit with radiator exhaust (out his hood), the direct sun, and engine air coming from the back. A coke can exploded and he thought his water line blew. His Renegade radiator performed flawlessly on the track and the round trip (no trailering). Elmers car is finally running reliably and the two were screaming around the track except at the straights where the 700 hp overcame his 550 hp.

See you at the BBQ, hope your dad is ok.

Heading out.. Be there at 1145ish... I couldnt find my pass side seat belt cam lock... grr

Looks like a great time. Sorry I couldn't make it. (really sorry)

And thanks to Mike P and all who helped Andrew get back on the road. He made it as far as Pleasanton and unfortunatly had a big time overheat. He parked it and called for a tow truck. Apparently there are a bunch of people in the same boat as the truck was delayed 2 hours. Anyway it's been a learning experience for him. We all have to go thru something like this at one time or another. Ask me sometime about changing a rear end in a 64 Dodge truck on a mountain back road to Cherry Lake at 2 in the morning.

neo914-6
High props to MikeP and his wonderful fiance for hosting this event. The AC was really appreciated in this weather and the view at his Almaden home is breathtaking. The area lended itself well to the roar of the V8's which prompted one of Mike's neighbors to stop by with his largely unmuffled quad runner. They apparently are used to Mike "excursions". biggrin.gif

I forgot to thank you, Felix. If it wasn't for you, alot of us would still feel like outsiders. Thanks for embracing and leading the beauty of the 914 and its endless powerplant opportunities. I am never bored of seeing yet another conversion, as they are never alike.

Yep, we went to ACE to get some sealant for the tstat housing leak and he changed his overheated oil. I hope his engine is ok. This heat tested all the cars. Harry and Mike jury rigged a wood heat shield because he had no rear window which worked great on the ride home (his metal gear shift knob was too hot to touch), Jeff's Leaver GT blew one of two fuel pumps and went above 200 (never before) driving back to Belmont (his son was almost passed out), and Chris hit over 200 but fortunately he only had to get back to Los Gatos.
neo914-6
Chris' suicide hinge, look at all the drivetrain access...
neo914-6
MikeP's 914 V8, future plans include supercharging and of course body/paint work.

His Elise may also get some added power too...

It's coincedence that he use to see Jeff do fiberglass work on his car while living in Belmont.
dan10101
Well, he just made it home.

I'll let him fill in the gory details.

Thanks Again,
Dan

Mike P went for a ride in Harry's and My car.. He wanted the snap that our cars have. Even though his car has 470hp, it felt as fast as mine does because it doesnt kick in till 4k, and it has no "snap" that normal v8's do.. I atribute it to an incorrect power valve in the carb. I dont think he's going supercharger now, and I think he is going to get his power valve correct, and maybe FI... maybe some other stuff..

Ahh... I Overheated.

On the way there, I saw 210 consistant, then I hit the hill... went up to 220. This was bad, brought the temp down to 210 after the hill, but I must have cooked my oil or something (maybe 110 heat has something to do with it) because the temp slowly rose to 230. At this point, I said enough is enough I need to pull over... Pulled over, and the large hose piece on the intake manifold has a tiny leak, and its boiling water out. I figure this is the problem, so I tighten it, released the pressure from the radiator cap, and water boiled out for about 2 mins. filled it, and ran the engine to get the air out. BUT instead of it sucking in the water, it just threw it all out!! It was as if the system was holding way more water than it needed.. so did that... bla bla bla... left.. Temp went to 210, then 220, and slowly to 230 and pretty much stayed there through the traffic lights and such. It was deadly hot inside as well... My ac fan wouldnt blow hard enough.. so that didnt work. I was dehydrating.. even though I was drinking water...

Got to mikes, ate, BS'ed bout 4 I decided to try and fix it, mike suggests changing oil, (Thanks Mike!!) So we did. Oil was cooked. Very dark brown. Almost black on my finger.

Went to ace for some form a gasket.. Unfortunately we got the non hardening one.. Well.. that really didnt work, but we did it anyways, and well..

On the way back, my temps just climed, and stayed at 230. Engine stumbling all the way, put a little load on it, and it just bogged and jerked and made bad noises.. I decide, no... We'll tow it.. So we went to the dublin imax parking lot.. BAD IDEA. It... Was... FULL!!! When I hit the first stoplight I forgot to switch on my fan so my temp went to 240..(thats my Oh Sht point...) Looked for a parking spot for 4 mins... at 240... Oh.. just what I freekin wanted....

Called for a tow, took 30 mins to get through. Its about 730-8. truck came around 1010. I got home at 1210 because we picked up another car (cool tow truck.......)

Needless to say.. IM pissed at my car... I cant get the air out the radiator... My setup isnt ideal, It never went over 205 before.... So..

I think im going to go with a rennegade setup.

I got pics... Tomorrow i'll post em.

Thanks Mike and all!!!

Porcharu
Hey Mike thanks for the great event (and great food) and thank you Felix for setting it up. Looks like I missed some good stuff when I had to leave early for baby sitting duty. I look forward to the next get together.
BTW my trucks air temp gauge said it was 115 in Mikes driveway and 110 going down 85. The gauge is accurate up to at least 105.

Im sorry I didnt get to talk to everyone.. My brain wasnt working with the heat.. Excuse my rudeness to those I didnt know...
