Send it to me and I will make it feel and perform like this!

If your tranny is feeling its age, grinding, and popping out of gear I have the solution for you! If you have checked the other, outside of the tranny causes for these symptoms and found them to be ok then your tranny may be in need of a rebuild.

Some outside of the tranny causes for some of your shifting woes:

-Shifter bushings along the shift rod
-Cone set screws
-Tranny cable adjustment, shifter adjustment
-Clutch, TO bearing, pressure plate
-Engine and tranny mounts

So, you have checked all of the above and it is still not working as it should. What do you do!?

Send it to me!

Repairs, modifications, conversions, you name it.

I am interested in getting your car shifting correctly and lasting a long time while providing you with the greatest value and service. If you have questions I would be happy to help you. If you want to take pics of your gear stack and get an opinion feel free to contact me. Do you want to bring it by and have me take it apart to diagnose it? I will gladly do this, and for free. I will diagnose any tranny for no charge.

I have a great stock of excellent used internal parts for much less than new with no loss in performance, as well as new, if you are interested. I have many different gear sets. I highly recommend all new main bearings; input shaft (x2), pinion shaft (x2) and differential (x2). I stock these bearing set at far less than retail.

For shipping instructions, PM me.

Any questions feel free to PM me wavey.gif

How to remove the stack from you tranny out of the car:

Step 1. Remove the shift console and the reverse switch with its pin

Step 2. Remove tail cone. Be ready for the reverse gear and its little bearings to fall out. You should now be looking at the business end of the tranny gear stack.

Step 3. Select 5th gear by taking a socket extension and pushing in the 4th/5th shift rod. Its ok to use a hammer, just dont beat the hell out of it wink.gif

(4th and 5th Shift rod in neutral)

You can now remove your gear stack by lifting at the intermediate plate.

***NOTE***
When you remove the intermediate plate you will have some gaskets between it and the case. These are of a particular thickness and need to be replaced with the same to keep the pinion shaft depth the same. Use a micrometer to measure the thickness of these (usually more than one) and keep that number handy. When you reinstall you need to measure the gaskets that come with the new kit and replace with ones that are of the same thickness.

Also, here is a link to Red-beards article on how to fix 1st with the tranny in the car. It can be used as a guide to how to remove the stack in the car.

Dr Evil
So, now you have recieved your rebuilt gear stack and you are very happy biggrin.gif How do you reinstall it?

Like so:

Step 1. Select 5th gear on your gear stack.

Step 2. Place the correct thickness of gaskets on the tranny case rear.

Step 3. Place the case on blocks leaving extra room under the center for the drive shaft as it sticks out farther than the bell housing. Allign the stack, intermediate plate and drive shaft in the case and lower into position. Be careful of the output seal for the drive shaft. Make sure the drive shaft moves through it with out catching the lip and causing the spring inside it to come out.

Step 4. Once the stack is installed, reassemble the 1st/rev gear stuff (make sure the flat needle bearing is UNDER the gear on the intermediate plate side!). Now put the tail cone back on.

Step 5. It is now time to put the tranny back into the neutral. In the first pic you can see the shift rod notches are off center. Take a screwdriver and push the 5th/4th shift rod so it is centered. It should look like the second pic.

Step 6. Once in neutral, put the shift console back in. The shift console only gets the O-ring. The gasket that comes with the seal kit is for the plug of the tail shifter that goes there, not for the side shifter console so don't use it.

Step 7. Reinstall the reverse pin and switch.

Install the tranny and enjoy!

Next to come, how to allign your shifter.
i love porsche
that looks great...i just got my sideshift..now i gotta start saving again

do you have any need for used parts or a case or anything, i have a partially dissasembled tailshift...dunno if/what kind of used parts you might use
Dr Evil
You may be able to use some of the parts for your own tranny. We shall see.
john grier
Mine might need a rebuild,
I also have a 901 that I got with a parts car,
Can you do anything with that?

whats the best shipping from mid oklahoma for a full transmission?

i dunno whats wrong exactly, but cars not drivable.

driving it kind of hard (after a clutch disc pressureplate and thowout replacement) and i get this loud CRACK and now the car rumbles when in gear and has no power to the wheels.

Dr Evil
Hey man, let me try to save you some money. If you have a "CRACK" and now nothing goes then your box may be done for as you may have just put a bunch of metal pieces through your diff. It may be in you rbest interest both money and shipping wise to pull the stack out as per my instrucitons and look at the teeth on your pinion and your differential. If they are gauled you would do better to have me get you a core tranny down here and rebuild it. A core would only run you about $75 over what shipping yours to me would cost. I have shipping instructions in teh first post. Coast to coast on GreyHound is about $70 so you should be a littl eless since you are closer. If you want to talk in more detail about this, feel free to PM or email me.

Dear Dr. evil,

I have a '74 914. It has a 2.0L motor and the trans keeps popping out of 2nd gear. headbang.gif I followed all your previous advice of things to try before calling you. I am desperate in need if a gear fix. smash.gif Can you help me? I'm located in the panhandle of WV and can deliver the unit personally.

Steve,
Yup, I can help you. The only thing is that I am booked until the end of the month. If you want to schedule a time in Sept to get this done then there will be no problem and a quick turn around.
Thanks for reading the whole post above and trying all the things I listed. I constantly have to refer people back to it and it takes time to do such. Youare already a step ahead thumb3d.gif

Dear Doctor,

I have a souped-up 3.0 SC engine mated to a side-shifter 901 with a ZF LSD. Now for the bad news:
- 2nd and 3rd grind if shifting occurs anywhere near top RPM's; oh, if I wait > 2 seconds they don't, but by then I'm doing 3 Mph
- 1st and reverse grind when engaging from idle after holding the clutch down for < 3 seconds; this one I can live with, and provide FYI

I'm a complete mechanical ignoramus, with no hope for reformation any time soon. Can you help me? What happens if surgery reveals terminal condition in there? Can you source parts, etc.? $500 all going well, really?

Cheers,
J.

Doe Dr Evil do 915s?

Dr Evil

Hi,

If you do 915's...you must do the 930 as well...correct? I have a pretty fresh 930 box with less than 5000 miles. While setting up the cable shifter and clutch, I managed to burn the 3rd gear synchro a bit. It isn't terrible...but it is annoying when it grinds going into third. If all you do is replace the 3rd gear synchro...how much should that cost (assuming everything else is unmolested)?

Thanks,

Bill
Dr Evil
I can do the 930, yes. The amount of work it takes to extract 3rd and change the teeth only is less than a full rebuild so I can charge less. I'll PM you and we can discuss it.
seanery
I have a transmission in a garage in Indianapolis, but I'm in Texas. How much would it cost for you to go to my house in Indianapolis, look at the two transmissions that are there, then pick the best one, take it home with you and then rebuild it, clean it, and make it work in my 3.2 project? cool_shades.gif
Dr Evil
Well, I am almost a doctor so you would be paying 3/4 of the doctors fees + specialist fees + mileage + time + food and lodging + hookers + clean up....etc.

I figure $1,000,000 ought to cover it wink.gif
seanery
sweet! count me in...I'll have my sister leave a check for you on the front porch. Just look under the mat!

Seriously, I'll be home for a few days in Sept. I'd love to send you a tranny to get super-sussed. I've got the original tail shifter from my 72 and an unknown side shifter that I got from Craig when I bought the car.
Dr Evil
Sure man, let me know when smile.gif

Dear Mr. Evil,
i have a 915 with flipped ring & pinon that needs to be checked out and i'd like to have a limited slip and the WEVO sideshift cover/conversion added ...

Right on, send it to me when ever you are ready. If it weighs more than 100#, Greyhound may not take it, though sad.gif Just strip all of the unnecessary parts off of it like the pully housing, throw out bearing, etc. This usually gets it to about 99# smile.gif

I had a '75 914 2.0 when I was in college in the 80's. I loved it and periodically I think about getting another POS 914, I mean Porsche 914, again. It really was love-hate, with all it's maintenance. Anyway, I found you through Camp 914. My problem is not with a 914 but a BMW. I have a manual '98 528. The tranny is bad, but driveable. Do you, or do you know someone like yourself of good repute that can rebuild one of these? I'm looking at $2,500 for a BMW factory rebuilt, which is actually a very good price. Dealers are desparate and are discounting factory parts greater than before. But you rebuild a 914 tranny for $500 and you have a loyal following. So I thought I'd ask of whom I might inquire. driving.gif
Dr Evil
I wish I knew someone, but I am pretty specific to Porsche gear boxes. There is a possibility I could do it for you, but it would not be a quick job as I would need to do some research first to see how exotic the box is. If it is not very unique, and I can find internal parts for ya, it would not take too long. PM me if ya wanna talk about that option smile.gif
carr914
Dr. Do you have a bell-crank rod (just the rod) that threads into my 914-6 intermediate plate?

T.C.
Dr Evil
I'll see if I have one. You didnt have one with your box, did you? I would have removed it and taped it to the box if you had one.
carr914
I don't remember if it had one back then, it doesn't now. Thanks for checking for me.

T.C.
Dr Evil
Nope, none here. I dont remember it having one, and if it did it would be in my spare parts bin as I dont use/need them. Sorry man.
carr914
Got any sources for them? Are they available at a Porsche Dealer or should I put a WTB ad on Pelican (I'm assuming the the rod is the same from a 911 to 914-6)

T.C.

Dr Evil
They are not hard to get last I checked, but I made one when I needed one for my car. Long bolt, cut off the head and drilled a hole for a cotter pin smile.gif
Mike Knox
Hi Mike,

I just drove my newly minted 1974 914-6 (3.2) for the first time yesterday, and now I have to get the interior installed. I'd like to budget for a rebuild of my '74 901 side shifter. My question is can you change the gearing so that I can continue to use it as a 5 speed rather than as a 4 speed starting in 2nd gear? I am a parts collector, and recently bought a 914-6 5th gear that Captain Crusty had for sale, so if that was a good purchase I've got that on hand already.

BTW, the CV Joint bolt sets I bought from you sometime back were an easy install and look good.

Mike Knox
Dr Evil
Hey Mike,

The 5th for the stock /6 is actually a smaller gear than the ZD in the /4 901 so you would be experiencing higher fwy RPM. The reason for the higher RPM is that the /6 needs more cooling. As for making your box a 5spd that has a taller 1st and changed 2nd, bring lots o money! You will need, at the minimum, a 904 shaft ($1800 or more) so I can install a different 2nd on it ($$). Very tall 1st gears dont really exist, but I can put the tallest one on and that would be $$$ for the parts. The most cost effective way to make a taller box for your car would be to use stock 2nd-4th (can mess with them a little if you really want) and put a flipped H gear in 5th (about $500 for the gears). I'll look over the gear chart and see what I can come up with.
Mike Knox
Thanks I appreciate it. I know already it's going to be fun having that engine push me around happy11.gif, but I love the idea of having all 5 gears available. Having said that I don't know if a 904 shaft is in the realm of near-term possibility in this economy. Like I said I have that 5th gear set from John on hand, and you described the exact reason I bought it. smilie_pokal.gif So incorporating it into the rebuild is a must. Tell me what you think the most intelligent way to go is. pray.gif

Thanks again!!

Mike
Van914
Dr.Evil,
What do you charge in addition to the $500 rebuild to install a LSD?
Thanks
Van
Dr Evil
I'll send you a PM, Van smile.gif

Mike, I still need to look at the gear chart. I was, er, busy last night beer.gif and am recovering.

Hey Doc,

I wanted to see how busy you are as far as 901 rebuilds.

I am putting a subie 2.5Liter engine and wanted a transaxle that would shift great and stand up to 180hp and 180ft lbs torque.

I wanted to discuss changing gears first(not so low) maybe second? to take better advantage of the motor or maybe use a higher 5th gear?

Your the Doc. let me know what can be done.

I hear there is an inexpensive way to go for a limited slip diff??

Thanks

Gary
Dr Evil
Hi Gary,

For the 180/180 set up you are shooting for a stock tranny should suit you fine. Have you driven a stock 914 for comparison? If not I would recommend it so you know where to start from as far as gear changing. For a water cooled engine the high RPM of 5th is a bit of a waste in power and gas so you may benefit from a higher 5th gear such as a flipped H gear or HB.

Now, if you are dead set on swapping gears around, which = $$$, then I need to know what the power band of your engine is going to be. The gears should be arranged in such a way as to utilize the power band the most. Unless you have $1800 or more, 2nd gear changing is not an option.

As for cheap LSDs, I would like to know where you heard this as I have no links to cheap LSDs. There are basically 2 options; the quaiffe which is a geared unit, and stock which uses clutch disks that need to be changed out when they wear. If you are not AXing, an LSD is pretty much overkill and not cheap at around $1800 last I recall.

I can build you up a respectable box that will shift perfectly and handle your engine as well as steer you away from spending needlessly on upgrades that you may not need smile.gif
westgl
Hi DR.

I read all of your posts,

The last one in regards to installation of returned gearhead,

read;

installation alignment of shifter to come.

Did I miss it??

Options:

1. Send the whole thing to me for a full rebuild and reseal - $500 labor + parts
-Shipping is about $80 coast to coast with Greyhound (see below).
-Please clean the case! I do not have a tank for this.

2. Send the gear stack to me for a full rebuild - $300 labor + parts
-Instructions for removal and install will follow
-Weight of stack and packing is 37lbs
-Shipping with FedEx is about $20 each way

3. Want to convert to a side shift? PM me.

I am interested in getting your car shifting correctly and lasting a long time while providing you with the greatest value and service. If you have questions I would be happy to help you. If you want to take pics of your gear stack and get an opinion fell free to contact me. Do you want to bring it by and have me take it apart to diagnose it? I will gladly do this, and for free. I will diagnose any tranny for no charge.

I also have a great stock of excellent used internal parts for much less than new with no loss in performance if you are interested.

SHIPPING INSTRUCTIONS:

Through my many rebuilds I and my customers have found the best and least expensive ways to send your trannies to me.

For a gear stack only this works best:
1) Get a plastic water bottle or cup and cut it so it just covers the speedo drive gear. This will keep it from being damages during tranzit like a helmet.
2) Fold some cardboard up and tape it to the end of the drive shaft to give the point some more suface area. This will keep the drive shaft from poking out of the box during shipping.
3) Get some small trash bags and fill them with news paper balls. These bags are them used to cushion the stack by placing them into the box around it. This will also keep the box from collapsing during shipping, and it cheap!
4) Choose the box with the tightest fit to keep your shipping charges down. FedEx has consistantly been the cheapest, most reliable and safest carrier that I have used for shipping large items.

For shipping me the whole tranny:
1) Clean off the case. It doesnt have to be clean enough to eat off of, but the cleaner you get it the easier it is to ship and the cleaner it will be when you get it back (because I do not clean them wink.gif ).
2) Go to Staples, UHaul, or any other store with packaging materials and get some packaging wrap (the stuff that looks like a big roll of saran plastic wrap).
3) Take your fairly clean tranny and wrap it up with the plastic. Take it to the nearest Grey Hound freight depot ( http://www.shipgreyhound.com/locations/locations.asp ) and ship it to me. Shipping is about $80 coast to coast.

Thats all! any questions feel free to PM me wavey.gif
