my '75 pops out of first gear. before that it was hard to find. local shop says it is an operating sleeve, syncho , and syncho ring. does this make sense ? is it very difficult to change ? can it be done by removing the rear cover - and replacing the worn parts?

Hey Man,
If it is just those parts then you can do it in the car even. 1st is relatively easy. For some pics of the insides you can click the tranny rebuild link in my signature line below. It will show you how to take the stack out should you want to.
