Does anybody remember and /or have a feature story (cover too?) about a wicked 914-6 (track car)? The article was in VW & Porsche magazine in the early 80's and had a 2 page picture of the car. It was darker blue, had HUGE front and rear fenders and rear wing, slope nose, 3 piece wheels, some big SICK Porsche 6 cyl. motor in it. IIRC, the front windshield said "AIR PORSCHE BOND" on it. I think it was a 'money is no object' build, continuous welds over the entire chassis for strength, etc.
I had cut out the car photo and mounted it on a piece of siver art stock. Lost it in a move years ago.

I have the article too and I'm looking right at it. Always wondered what happened to it. It was owned by John Bond Jr. The sun of the publisher of Road & Track. I also have a article in Excellance about it.

I have plenty of pics but no scanner until next week.
I'll post them when I can scan. The Excellance articale is much better and goes into more detail.
So where is this car now????
Here is another lost 914 supermod: Where is the car owned by Ken Mack of the Golden Gate region? His shop was in Campbell and called Ken's Porsche Technique.

That pic looks like a much darker blue that in the article. I definitely remember that article - I damned near memorized it! My "dream" 914 for decades. That issue certainly got dog-eared in short order - now I handle it like it's made of ash. I only take it out on special occasions! LOL
Still never saw how they plumbed the intercooler - always wondered how it "collected" air for decent charge cooling.
Forget any kind of speed bumps or driveway dips! Bye-bye front end.....
That's a bas a$$ 914 though. I took pics of the article for Chris Julian - the only other full tilt AIR "widebody" I've seen ever hit the street (at least seen "virtually")
The photographed pics didn't do the article justice though - I wouldn't mind a scanned version myself.

The Excellance articale said the first to use the bodywork was the Altec_Lansing GTU car, than the Vonk car, than the Bond car. When was that picture taken?

Ken is still around. Dont know about the car.
I do know one where at least two "famous* 914 Race cars are sitting next to houses in NorCal. Garretson Enterprises prepped/raced 914's.

I have a story about that red one too, it was from a Road & Track Special Porsche edition from the late '80s. Says it has a 3.0 RSR engine. Ron Mistak owned it and drove it to 148 mph at Nissian's test track.

Why are you calling that car a 914?
It's more 911 (or 935) than 914, but in reality it is a custom made race car. Someone tell me what is original 914 on that car.
A VIN plate does not count.

Well the red car has a stock door sill, rocker box, front firewall, windshield frame, rear light panel, targa bar, roof. Looks pretty 914-6ish to me. Although the rear wing is a little atrocious.
You gotta remember most of these cars were built before the days of tube chassis cars. So for the most part they are all stock tub based cars. I doubt they relocated pickup points.

He's right Sammy. Those all started life as tub cars. I visit with Wayne Baker a couple of times a month to learn about all the SoCal 914's that where raced. Amazing how similar the cars where to the NorCal guy's. Wayne was involved with AJ and Mistak for years. Aj's shop is 6 minutes from Wayne's.

This thing looks like a Tonka! Is it realy perfomance or just to make the car wider? I was wondering about it and found a 2500$ kit like this but hated the rear end. Is anyone racing this type of beast?

Mistak's later recreation of the red car is hardly the red 914-6 pictured it once was. ury probably has that article too

Yup, the thing turned pretty wild. Here are a couple of pics that VegasRacer took at, well, Vegas a while back. Mistak is a good buddy and I often go to the track and play crew-chief.
Don't see much teener in there anymore....

Just to prove the IS a little 914 left...
'Nuther VegasRacer pic from the same event. The 914 door sills, part of the floor panels, part of the firewall, and part of the front fender wells are still there and matbe a few other 914 shavings. It was legal in PCA club racing as a914 when it was built several years ago.

He built this one when the Porsche 911 GT1 was in vogue in the FIA GT Championship. The body work is sort of a reduced scale version of it.

Mistak's GT1 car started life as the red Alan Johnson time trial car. It says so in the Excellance article and shows a picture of it with those big red rear fenders still in place. The car is 914 based, not a complete tube frame.
The blue John Bond Jr. car is the AIR car.
The Vonk car was converted back to the Kermer GT car.
There is also the black Altec-Lancing car which used the same bodywork by AIR.
And there was a white clone of the Altec-Lansing car.
One of the Atltec cars became the Cerwin Vega car and was silver for a time.
These are all seperate car as far as I know.
Where are they now.......
