so basically I'm 17 and I'm about to tear into my new (to me of course) junker 914 that surprisingly still runs...I am planning on it being a track car but have no idea on taking it apart and need a good service manual...don't worry, I'm pretty innovative and also have numerous helpful sources...what's the best book I should get...thanks!...hopefully by the end I'll be worthy of posting on the "before and after" thread

Get a Haynes, and try to score a deal on the factory manuals (spendy).

Ya, Haynes and, if you can find one, grab a Clymer too. I often switched back & forth cuz if one didn't have a picture the other would.
