My kid took the end off his finger(meet slicer) the doc put a piece of some kinda artifical skin replacement over it helped the healing process alot.
Me, I just got a bad spranged ankle a week ago when some press tooling broke and a coworker and I hit the floor, Him landing on my ankle. The whole time the engineer saying that shoulda worked.

Being a young machinist, I've had a fair share of accidents. (Today marks my 2nd year being gainfully employed in the field.) Was polishing out the inside of a cast impellor at the end of a lathe op. I even asked for a polishing stick at the begining of my shift. Dayshift foreman said don't be a pussy. Ended up jogging my finger into the blades about an hour before shift end. (Getting tired/careless.) Ground around the nail on my middle finger all the way to the bone. Didn't ever lose the rest of the nail. Then, just past the one year mark, some 30y.o. noob 'shploded am abrasive cutting wheel with the shield off and I caught a big chunk across the first three on my right hand, all the way to the bone. 20 stitches. Huge scar. Fell of a 3rd story building doing building maintenance, hit and rolled, ended up with just a tiny scratch that scared, but I just noticed that it's gone. Tons more. That's just since I was 18.

Hi JP,
Sorry to see that the chipper got the best of you on this go around...
I know it takes up time, but I'd go get that finger looked at tomorrow. I did something similar several years back with electric hedge shears. I had the "auto" button on that locks the motor in the on position and was shearing a hedge and somehow got my left index finger caught in it. The shears went right to the bone.
Although you got the chunk out, you still may need a nice clean packing or at least a topical antibiotic. You don't want to mess with that thing.
That's going to play hell tossing the car around at an AX and recovering from tank slappers!

If you haven't seen a doctor yet, GET IT LOOKED AT TODAY by a HAND surgeon!
Labor Day, 2001, I had the tip of my right middle finger nipped off by a spooked horse. The ER doctor wanted to amputate at the first knuckle, but I asked for a second opinion. The hand doctor was able to reconstruct, save the knuckle and nail, and add tissue from the palm of my hand. It's about 1/2" shorter now, slightly numb at the tip, but otherwise fully functional.
See a specialist soon. . . .good luck and be safe. . . .

Sep 4 2006, 10:48 AM
That's nasty, get it fixed.
From personal experience ya better go now as those damn hand surgeons tend to be watching TV or at a pinky lifting tea or some other doing somesuch really important thing that makes them not want to answer the pager and show up.
It's gonna be a long wait for that joker to show up at the hospital- if they even show at all.
My hand surgeon never showed after 3.5 hours, so they had me drive to another sister hospital and told me "it was all set up to go right in, they are waiting for you and they will take care of you right away "
Showed up at the sister hospital, they never heard of me ad told me to get at the back of the line. Wifey got a little upset, and some joker with a lab coat with "NOT a Doctor" stenciled on his coat started callling the cops to have her arrested and evicted. Fortunately a real Doctor heard something through the door and came out and went "ohmygod, come in"
So, four and a half hours after getting my index finger caught in a fan belt, the Hand Surgeon goes "Why didn't you come in sooner? We will have to amputate"
Bottom line, getcher ass in to the Doctor.
Make sure they show up, and
Feel free to kick any asshole in a lab coat with "NOT a Doctor"right in the nuts.

Wood chippers are dangerous as JP has already found out.
Here's local article from a few weeks ago.
Man killed in wood chipper accident
A 30-year-old man was killed this afternoon when he was sucked into a wood chipper while trying to shake loose a piece of wood that had jammed it.
The man owned a tree service company working in the 8900 block of 26th Ave. in Pleasant Prairie, according to a Pleasant Prairie Police Department press release.
The man was using his foot to clear debris that had jammed the wood chipper around 5:20 p.m. when his foot became entangled in the machine, witnesses told police.
His coworkers tried to rescue him from the intake, but he was pulled into and through the wood chipper, according to the release.
The incident remains under investigation by Pleasant Prairie detectives, the Kenosha County Medical Examiner's office and officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Police withheld the man's name while they attempted to notify his family.
