So, my 914's been running well. I've been planning to go to RRC, so I didn't want
to break anything. I have been concerned about how hot it has been running so
I decided to add a CHT gauge. I can't break anything doing that, right?
Well, it took a while to install, but I got it in. The sensor was the hardest, it didn't
want to go under the plug. So, I tested it out. I was running a little hot. I checked
the oil, and it was low. I added a quart, and the temps came right down to normal.
But, the car also seemed to be missing a little. So I decided to remove the throttle
body to check the throttle switch. It was fine. Idle has been a problem,so I
decided to check the AAR to see if it was closing. It was, but the input elbow was
broken. Got another one and reinstalled it. The car would start but die
immediately. I had pulled the AAR wires out and they were shorting the electrical
system. I pulled the AAR completely, it's hot here all the time. No harm in that,
right? At least for now...
So, now the car will not idle at all, is backfiring (exhaust), and hesitating!
I should have left well enough alone!
Anyway, my questions are these:
1. Does the AFM have to be sealed? Will I get vacuum leaks from the black cover
if it is not totally sealed?
2. My engine has pretty low compression, 90 psi. Will that affect the AFM and also
the idle?
3. Could the valve adjustment cause the backfiring and hesitation I am
experiencing? It has been getting worse over time.
I really want to go to RRC, but not the way the car is running right now! It's a
long ride, 1300 miles!!
Oh yeah, I also found a nail in one of my tires, sigh....
