Full Version: I made glass pack megaphones for my SIX tonight!

Trekkor
Got a pair of 22" x2" in 2"out CherryBomb glasspacks.

I made flanges that mount to the headers out of 1/4" flat bar stock.

After cutting one end at a 10 degree angle and welding the flanges on, I did a short test drive.

My wife said, "You'll be happy to know, there wasn't anytime that I couldn't hear you!".

I'll run them at Alameda to entertain myself, take them off for Laguna and then back on for the rest of the season.

They sound fantastic clap56.gif

I shoot a couple pics tomorrow and provide some 50' drive-by Db readings on the limiter. mueba.gif

$50 project...

Trekkor,
Your better bring your Sebring muffler along just incase. Occasionally some official from Alameda comes with a sound meter....

They want us to be pretty quite...although I have never seen anyone get nailed, I would hate to see you have to stop running because of sound.

A small Six with Megaphones can be pretty raucous burnout.gif

FYI smile.gif

Don't you want the crossover pipe for some added torque?

Cherry trees , sir. lol2.gif

Pics tomorrow...

I will bring my muffler to the a/x, no doubt, and my sound meter, too. idea.gif

I ran my megaphones on my FOUR at Candlestick one time and I had a blast, literally. Nobody seemed to mind.

I know Alameda is a little more rigid, but if you've ever watched "Mythbusters", they make way more noise there than I ever will laugh.gif

HAHA I am so happy to have my loud exhaust off the car. Anything over an hour was murder. I'm begining to think alot of people around here are mildly deaf biggrin.gif
DanT
Maybe I should bring my shorty (loud) flowmaster stinger biggrin.gif

Louder is faster, right?...Right?

If you are beating my times at Alameda I'll make sure to complain to the officials about excessive noise. happy11.gif

FYI I recall Monty in his 996 having to change back to a more quiet exhaust at Alameda this season due to "official ruling".

...Hey I have two old Supercraps I could throw on my car without the baffles. Bet those would sound mean.
Trekkor
Grant bring the 'Trapps. For me to look at.

As for the deal with Monty. I personally used my sound meter and could not get readings that were "too high".

I think they may have been metering him on Dbc as oppossed tp Dba. BIG differance. The meter has to be switched to Dba as mine defaults to Dbc. huh.gif

OK I will save that for Marina and Candlestick.... smile.gif

Are we going to get some pictures?
Trekkor
Yes!!

Man those would make some great potato launchers!
Chris Pincetich
Crazy sweet...they're red! Looks like the angle should help avoid scrapes during unloading. Or maybe it is to aim the sound at our ears? beerchug.gif
DanT
Oh, I thought those were the slip in supports for your new removable spoiler chairfall.gif

Looks good Trek....I will be interested in hearing them and see if you pass sound at Marina. dry.gif
Trekkor
Sound data is in...Drum roll, please.

@ 60' 95 Dba
@ 50' 96 Dba
@ 40' 99 Dba ohmy.gif

No problem for TH and Sears as they limit out at 103Dba.
Definite "no go" leave 'em home for Laguna.

Question is, will they have the meter tomorrow or will they just say "you are too loud"? idea.gif

I'll have my meter, of course.
With the wide open airfield and the usual windy conditions, I'm banking on 92 Dba @60' naughty.gif

didn't one of those things fall off a car at Monza, bounce right into the path of another car and cause it to go off the high side?
JPB
Schweet two pack jack. Me likes the stripes and bombs! Ya should slip on some chrome tips to make the install look finished. Ya know what I mean?

Hey, I think his look great!!! A couple of chrome tips to cover the pipes at the main bodies and he's got something rocking here specially with them smaller pipes pocking out from that setup. One thing I do have a question about is not having an Xpipe or a collector which would ballance the exhaust as a unit? I see that hot rodders are collecting their exhaust gases now through Xpipes and bettering their performance as a whole.

beer.gif Just an observation.
Trekkor
Rich from Jerry Woods saw/heard them at the a/x today.

He thought they will make a good set-up for the track.
He also said that they have found a crossover does not make much differance on Porsche SIXES.

He said dual 3 into ones with cookie-cutter megaphones works best.

It was also noted that Bill's 911 ( Fritz ) is louder.

My 2.7RS 914-6 with headers and gutted twin pipe sport muffler was louder than your car with the "cherry bombs" biggrin.gif

Actually very mellow sound.

Would it be out of line for me to suggest taking a section from the middle of each muffler and welding them back together so they don't stick out so far? I doubt the sound/db would be affected noticeably, would save weight/gas restriction, and eventually you're going to take one of 'em in the shins. Regards, -K-

That was the original idea. I still may do that and re-pack the glass chamber with mineral wool intead of fiberglass. We'll see.

I was shootin' for 18", these are currently 22".

Sheesh.....I had those cherry bombs on my car when I bought it. It sounded like an old Beaver aircraft taking off! The first thing I did was cut them off and replaced them with "Turbo muffler" which the parts guy said were way quieter.....Not! I have cheap regular mufflers on it now....Ok cruising, but still rumble pretty loud under acceleration.....I want as much quiet as I can get.

Anybody want the glass packs or turbos....Pay the shipping and they are yours.
