I just recieved an ORIGINAL 1.7 emblem in the mail today. Are the originals chrome or black? Mine is black. It is made of aluminium/aloy with two pins on the back side. WELL, what say YOU?

Up to the end of 1972 there was just 914 and 914/6 in gold.
from 1973 through 1974 they had 914, 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 in black but they tend to fade to a silver color. They had the 1.7 and 2.0 in 1973 to distinguish between the models and 1.8 and 2.0 in 74 for the same reason. The early ones were pot metal, and later ones were plastic. In 1975 and 1976 they went with decals.

Thank you all for the great responses. I guess that my numbers will look great in black as they are and perhaps authentic as they should be. It will be fun to put some Hps in the car and then pass them with a 1.7 on the back.LOL I might even put a Tornado sticker also just for spite...

I believe they started sometime in 1975. It is another of these running changes they did. I would like to know (by VIN) where the change from metal to plastic was made, and where the change to decals was made. There were 914 1.8 decals, and therefore had to have started in 1975. It is hard to be precise about these things because the factory did not worry about documenting minor changes to parts.

Could the plastic ones come from Pelican Parts and were added long after the fact?
Plastic seems a little aftermarker don't you'all think?

in silver or black? My 2.0 has been in the family since 78 or 79, and the numbers have always been shiney, bright chrome. I guess the first owner could have stripped 'em though...

AHHHA, I knew there was a chrome one somewhere! Not shure if my alumi/pot metal will buff out though?
Worth a try.

No, the plastic ones are factory!
No, the metal ones were never chrome!
The metal ones were aluminum I believe, and they were anodized black.
The anodizing fades in the sun until it returns to an aluminum color.
I have seen them do this color change gradually over the last 30 years.
The engine lid PORSCHE was available in gold (up to 1972) then in silver (chrome) (1973 on).
