The alternator on the right is the replacement. What is the small black box in the center, and do I need it? The one I'm replacing does not have it...?

It is a noise suppressor for the electrical system.

That is commonly known as a capacitor. Yes you do need to have it.

will he need to *dimple* the rear cover with that replacement alt? old thread with a terminal shorting issue comes to mind.

Nope. Found this thread and trimmed the washer. Stud length was fine - no contact.

Hello, Do you see the 2 little cutouts in the alternator housing...there are suppose to have rubber insulators in those little cutouts, to keep the cover from hitting the post check your old alternator for them..
