How about a forum that deals with what parts from different makes and models will work on the 914. Such as brakes, suspensions, lights, springs, wheels, switches, relays, ect. How many VW parts can be used? What parts from other Porsche, BMW, Volvo, and other european cars will work. What has to be reworked to make it work.

Do you want a seperate forum for this ?? Its easy to setup.

probably some sort of matrix would be better than a forum. add it to the 914 info portion of the site.

More of a cross reference for the site than another forum ?

that's what I'm thinking. once all the compatibilities are figured out it isn't going to change. people will just be asking the same questions over and over anyways. biggrin.gif

Probably easier to do tech articles,,,,,

There is one of these for the Jaguar people. It is a database. People submit their findings and someone updates the database.

They have recently made it interactive, but it used to be just line by line sorted by category. You just scrolled down untill you found the part you wanted, and it listed the original, the replacement, where to get it, what years and models it was used on, how it differed, why it was better (or not), and the part numbers.

This can also be used to list mods - for example 911/Volvo/BMW calipers and the relevant part numbers and other info.

You just need someone willing to maintain it, and people to submit the info.

Example:

System: Cooling System
Part name: Heater Valve
Jaguar part#: C41051
Cross reference: Pep boys/Factory Air 74612
Vendor: Major parts chains
Market: All Markets

Models: XJ S1,XJ-S,XJ S2,XJ S3
Notes: plastic valve instead of factory metal

This is a good idea.

A lot of the interior parts are VW, so I've been told that front calipers are the same as VW late type 3 which are cheap. 911, BMW, VW, Volvo interchanges, we need a good list for reference.

The front calipers are not the same as the Type III. But the Type III calipers are cheap...

They are the same as the Type IV calipers, I believe. Which aren't nearly so cheap. (I know that the rotors are the same as the Type IV, not quite so sure on the calipers.)

See, we need a list! Dave, we are both wrong, but I'm right they will bolt up!

Type 3 calipers 3/71-74 are (almost) type 4 calipers, Part number 311-615-107B and Caliper rebuild number 411-698-471. There are slight differences, but they are interchangeable.

66-2/71 Type 3 are ghia calipers part number 311-615-107-8A. These are the replacement late style (2-pin) as the early (1-pin) are NLA.

Aaah, I thought all Type III calipers were the Ghia ones! Nice to know.... I know the 914 calipers are not the same as the Ghia ones. For all I know, they could be identical to the late T-III ones.

I don't know 100% myself, I've never tried, but Alex at Harmony Road (1 of our 2 local 914 resto & repair shops) says the calipers are basicly the same and bolt right up.

He only has about 75 scrap 914's, plus 25-35 914's that are in good to restorable condition and a dozen T3's, 411/412's, 356's, 924's, 944's and a couple of 911's. He might know what he's talking about.

Before anyone gets total wood and starts shooting me email's about this secret stash, he thinks all of his stuff is 24k gold. For example he want's $1200 Canadian ($800. US) for a set of 2.0 head cores.
