So, I've spent the last few hours pouring over the 'Garages' past posts, but can't seem to put my finger on it. Here are the symptoms--that I thought to be 'vapor lock' on my '74 1.8 L-Jet, rear mounted fuel pump:

I drove it about 30 miles with no problems; great power, accel., response etc. I stop at a gas station to go to the bathroom (about 2 minutes total). Go and start up the car--started up fine--and try to take off, but it had next to no power; it was spitting and sputtering pretty bad, once it kicked out completely. But it smoothed out after 2nd, but still a HUGE loss in power. I assumed it was vapor lock, so I let it set for a few more minutes (10 or so--I know, not long enough, but I had places to be!). The sputtering stopped, but the power was very bad.

I've let it sit for over an hour and started it up, still the same. I've read the forum, like I said earlier, but I'm not sure of the real problem. I hope it isn't anything terrible--after all, it ran great until I shut it off. I did notice it was running a bit rich the past week, but I had it adjusted and it seemed to be ok. Any ideas? Poor little beast doesn't want to get passed going 30 miles an hour on the highway sad.gif.

More of a guess really but I suspect a stuck or leaky injector. Remove them and place in a jar to see how they spray.
Joe Bob
Definitely fuel related....Fuel filter....or pressure or the injectors...
Barretta
No chance it is just vapor lock?
Joe Bob
Vapor lock is VERY rare....
bd1308
retarded timing. or dwell. definately ignition related.

my $5 on that.
Barretta
I thought about timing too, but I've driven it about 1ooo miles, and 30 miles directly before this, and had no problems with it.
Barretta
I suppose I'll just have to do a one-over on the entire fuel delivery system. Poor little bugger.

I agree with Z . . . the car will sputter and have the described symptoms with a fuel delivery problem.

In my car the problem was the fuel pump. To my amazement, when I had sypmtoms like that (and just from driving around my driveway) it turned out that my fuel pump had crapped out (which my dad and I had never seem before) and was not pulling suction.

See if your injectors are all getting volate when its running. and the try to check fuel pressure by tapping into one of the lines with a gauge.

Thanks for the help, like I said... I'll do a once over.

I am just hoping it isn't something major--as far as mechanicals go. When it first happend I thougt, 'oh no, the transmission.'

Oh ya, there is a little squeek type noise when I take off. What in the Holy --- is that?

Are you dragging a caliper?
SLITS
Also try looking at your point gap (dwell). Closed up ---- no run.
MartyYeoman
Check the flapper in your air-meter for sticktion.
Barretta
Not a caliper, brand new four all the way around. I'm looking at it tomorrow, so we'll see whats going on. Might take a bit to diagnose. We'll see!
