Full Version: turning engine by hand while still in the car

I have a '72 with the 1.7L engine.

The engine is seized and I've been soaking it for about two weeks.

I want to try to get a wrench on it to turn it by hand to try to break it loose.
I've felt in the front at the cooling fan area and it feels like there's a cap there and no nut/bolt to turn.

Should I try to turn it with the alternator? I'm thinking I'm not going to get enough force on it through the fan belt that way.
Is there another way that I'm missing?

Have you tried putting it in gear and rocking the car?

jack up one side of the rear of the car.
chock wheels
put in 5th gear
remove rear wheel
put 2 lugs in
pry with jack handle


ps - dont try to turn engine bt prying fan with lever - it will break fins

There is a 13 mm head bolt in the center. since its only an eight mm bolt, you can
only turn from r to left and probably with limeted force before breakage. Turning the
alternator is easy but tranfering this thru the V-belt is quite marginal. Dimitri

I just got the car up on jack stands a few minutes ago.

Ok, no luck breaking it loose this way but now a couple of loops of my intestines are now dragging the ground. pinch.gif blink.gif ohmy.gif

What's the chance of damaging the transmission (or anything else) by prying on it this way.

I'd say put it in 5th gear and give it a yank with a tow strap attached to another vehicle.

However, if you've put this much work into it and it still hasn't turned over - I'd say the motor is a lost cause...

Are you sure you didnt lunch a valve or a piston? This woudl sieze your engine for good. (happened to me) You should not need crazy strength to get it going after soaking it with oil in the boars.

Yeah, I had pretty much written this engine off anyway. It sat for 20 years with the carbs open to the elements. The PO was in the middle of a carb conversion when he gave up on the car.
I've never torn down a Type 4 engine so I was going to use this one for the experience. I thought it'd be easier to get apart if the engine was broken free.

From what I've been told, it was a running engine when it was parked .... but that was 20 years ago.
The rocker arms are off and all the valves appear to be closed. It doesn't move at all.

Pull the plugs!!!
You will never over come the compression of a motor with al the valves closed.

Ha give us al the pieces of the puzzle and we can fix anything.

With all due respect, this ain't compression. biggrin.gif

Plugs are out and it doesn't budge at all.

I filled the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil a few weeks ago. Then two weeks ago I filled the crankcase with a 50/50 of MMO and ATF. Should I try something else?

I had a strange thing happen to an engine that was sitting up for years. Seems H2O had mixed with the oil. The engine turned over OK but the valves never moved. The oil/ water combo must have made a concoction that ate away at the aluminum cam gear.
