Pulled the freshly rebuilt 2056 out of the demon car today. Took about 2.5hrs and only f'd up the ground strap (DOH, I forgot that lil bugger). Next on the docket is breaking it down so I can drag it inside. Once inside I'll disassemble the top end & find out what was causing all that damn white smoke (broken ring?).
I have the old 1.7L which will get reinstalled so as to make it possible to move the car around on it's own power (novel concept).

I've actually contemplated getting a scissor lift to make working on the underside a bit easier... The red one hiding in the corner hasn't moved in about 5 years (been off the street for more than 10...)
Click to view attachmentThen there's the one I just picked up... It needs some fender and trunk work (putting on steel flares "while I'm at it". Here's a look at it:

Is this in Buffalo? Too bad you weren't there last Friday when I stopped in to see Dave Eddy, and his mechanic (Nate). I had a lot of goodies for show and tell. There is still time for a Niagara area get-together this winter.

Wow!
I lived in Buffalo for ten plus years and I NEVER saw so many 914s in one place! The few 914s that I did see in Buffalo looked exactly like those though.
If you want another one for your collection/sickness I've got a stripped down 74 2.0 and a barn full of parts that I know my mother would be thrilled to have removed from her place in Clarence. Think about it...

Hmmm, Dave Eddy is in Clarence, and he dragged his home from Utah. I'll let him know that one is available. Price?

I don't know, $700?
It's a solid rolling chasis with a brown interior. I have pictures if wanted, I have to figure out how to post them (or I could email them) I got it as a project car in my college daze and the sickness set in real fast.
Once it's on jack stands why stop? I stripped everything down and put it all in individual boxes. That was the extent of my skill and cash flow. The engine is stripped down still waiting for that rebuild, but the transmission is completely intact and untouched.
I moved to Portland, OR this past year and bought a mint silver 74 2.0 with 40,000 original miles on it. I'm all about projects, but having a car sitting in a barn 2,300 miles away seems a bit excessive.
If I knew then what I know now...
Sorry for the hijack!

I would love to take on another project but there's even a 4th 914 that didn't make the picture... It's going to grow up strong - got flares & will be shopping for a six over the winter...
Davep - Dave Eddy stopped over last week but I was out of town when you were in... Another time...

When you come home to visit we'll get together for sure. I just took the entire engine to the basement - just need to crack open the case now... This engine is going to get carbs - I've had it w/the FI and it isn't because of a lack of effort...

I just looked at your name today, scribbled on a piece of paper on my desk. I can still use a couple rear fenders. I've got the front fender covered and could probably make due with the rears I have but it would be all the easier to cut off a rear end from a donor car and replace mine.
I'll post a pic of the green car's damage areas tomorrow. Studying has me by the short & curlies for the next few weeks (til 15-Jan).
Thx for following up Luke. BTW, do you know Drew (aka drewvw)? He's from Rochester but lives in Boston now...

Cool, thanks for the pick of your baby. I just picked up a set of steel flares a couple weeks ago. They'll go over the fenders I put on. Not certain yet how to do it all yet but I'll figure it out. Thinking about buying a welder and learning myself.

I tore down the orange cars engine (still need to split the case though). There wasn't much oil in the rocker arm areas so my only guess is that the oil pump got clogged or something. I don't think that explains the white smoke but I havn't seen a smoking gun. Getting the heads done from Hoffman, replacing the jugs w/rebored 94mm's to get the skirt clearance just right, and decided to get a new cam/lifters to match the rebuilt Dellorto DRLA 40 carbs (rebuild in process).
It's only $...

Luke -
Can you believe the indian summer we're having? I thought for sure the green car (needs fenders) would be buried under snow by now.
I'm free next week, maybe I could scoot over to your neck of the woods one eve? I'm free any night.
Thanks for posting the pics. I only need the rears.
