got my new wrx motor installed and running last night, and started tweaking the computer to compensate for the increase in air flow... right as the motor gets to temp (fans had kicked on @ 186, and cooled the coolant down to 176) something comes loose @ idle, and before i can get to the key through the passenger window....

I did get to drive it... made it about a mile, said, ok, need to go tune, and came home, it broke in the garage....
Glad this year is over, hope next is better, will drop the motor tommorrow AM, go meet the driving crew for a picnic, and then spend the evening throwing snowballs @ Kim.

I wish you the best of new years and a fixed engine.

BJ, That is rough!
What would cause that, incorrect cam belt adjustment?
Crazyhippy
Dec 31 2006, 08:58 PM
timing couldn't do that... unless i broke the head off a valve
I'm guessing foreign matter into the motor somehow, but wont know till it's tore apart.

I had something similar happen to my 2.0 4 cyl 914 engine. It turned out to just be a crappy cheap spark plug that went back and cracked, but then the plug arched to the head and welded its self
Hey on another note how tough was it to drop in the suburu engine?

All your pulley marks line up......timing belt slip?
Me sorry. Is it a JDM engine?
GeorgeRud

Is the Subaru engine an interference design (ie the valves will hit the pistons if the timing belt breaks and the cams go out of time)? It would suck to have to tear one of those down and haved to deal with all that water!

A lot of Subaru engines are not 'interference' engines.

The valve should hit before the plug gets pounded...I wonder why a forien object took so long to make its way in ?
I had alternator bearings fall into a cyl (don't ask) once. The results were bad
fast. I would also check your fuel maps and timing at the time you were tuning. I doubt it caused the breakdown, but would realy suck if it happened again while tuning it.
Good luck Bro

German car + Japanese engine can only lead to very bad Ju Ju. It's a curse. You need to find a Buddhist Priest to excorcise the demons within the machine or it will never run properly.

I hope you get things ironed out. Knock on wood, the only problem I have is a small coolant leak. Mike J is gunna tackle that one for me in a few days...
Still need a new turbo though, do you got one?

Were either the shortblock or the longblock turbo originally? if not the compression is too high.

Intake lift doesn't need to be very high with boosted engines. Might take a little while for something to break the valves first.

I should be able to re-build this one, tear it down, quick pass w/ ball hone, and double check the cyls, new bearings, rings and good to go...I already have a Known good head, and 3 good spare pistons.
Have to go buy a 14MM Allen wrench to get the wrist pin out now....

Dayum BJ... you are havin luck with Subi engines like I have luck with 924s and 944s.
I think you've spent almost enough in subaru repairs as some have in /6 conversions. That's almost ironic, if it weren't so bad

I'm not into motors over 3K yet...
2K for the 1st one, 400 for the 2nd, gaskets, oil pump, waterpump, timing belt etc...
I dont see -6 motors running for 3K very often, and never over 300HP for that $
