Full Version: 76 wiring harness has a "rev limiter"

I'm preparing a 76 2ltr for installation. The smogged has been stripped off and placed in a box for safe keeping.

The wiring harness has a "rev limiter' device that pulgs in on it (75 and 76 cars). The name implies what it does...I think. Why would you want to limit engine revs, unless you are renting a U-Haul truck.

Do I need it to run...can I alter it or leave it off?

I was doing some research on how to hook-up the wiring harness (it was off when I bought the motor) and went to Jeff Bowlsby's site and found the 76 harness and Jeff had a picture of this part & harness.

This makes more sense to me now...

If i had to guess... Cause I don't know squat about this.....

That is NOT a rev limiter.

Thats a speed limiter. (MPH VS Revs)

If I had to guess. Since this a late model.

It might be hooked up to the Mile counter under the passenger footwell.

Thats just a guess.
Hopefully this confuses you more... Lol.....

In the 75 dealer service and training guide it says USA & CA models were equipted with this item. It says this relay does the following:
1. Fuel cut-off in pulsed operation
2. Speed limitaiton by distributor rotor.
2a Speed litimitation by fuel cut-off triggered by an additional rpm switch.
1 & 2 apply to all USA. 1 & 2a are for CA.
As for the fuel cut-off, I was told it was in case of accident the fuel pump would be shut down to prevent fires. The speed limitation was to replace the expensive rev-limiting distributor rotor. Lastly the part number the dealer service guide says the part number is 039.906.021A

So, do you need this item? Probably not. It looks like it was for safety requirements only.

That makes sense

It is not a rev limiter....

It's a speed driven relay to cut off fuel if you exceed X mph...

The dizzy may still have the bosch rotor that does have the REV limiter built in..

Most fellas (I think) have tossed them... And gone in favor of thr regular NON REV LIMITER rotor.

That's interesrting news for me.....

So it seems you caqn by pass the relay.. And remove it.

And swap rotors... if you haven't already done so... (or PO)

Then you can go as fast as the car will let you.....

I'm sure the Crusty one will show up and tell ya exactly whats up later today.

I love the technical side of this place.... very kewl....
