Full Version: Cutting fenders for future flares

I'm going to get flares at some point in the near future, but I need tires now. Rather then buy a skinny set now then buy another wider set later, I'm thinking that I'd just get the wider set now. The idea is that I can trim enough of the fenders to allow the tires to fit, while allowing enough of the fenders there to attach the flares later.

I have a few questiones of those of you that have flares:
*What is your measurement from the ground to the bottom of the stock fender, front and rear.
*What is the measurement after the fender id trimmed, front and rear.

On a related note, If I was to keep the same size tire front and rear, what's the generally accepted size? I'm trying to get a bit more bite on the road without going hog wild.

This end result would be something like this, till I get the flares on.

I see all the less than urban boys have responded.......

Ya might wanna get the flares first and do some measurements. Cutting a wide swath is kinda like Sherman marching thru Georgia....neccessary at the time but way outta line when you look at it later.

He had an idiot son that had a LARGE weener.....not much to talk to but he did have 30 sons and daughters.....not many males around in the deep south around 1869 ish......they were all doing time or a permanent dirt nap..........

Have you considered stretching your fenders instead of cutting, welding, or glassing? The attached picture shows a 914 flared with this technique. Here is an album with more:

Damn.. you guy's suck. If you cant answer his questions (shut up) dont make fun of his idea's. Let him persue his own dream car 914.

Now about the flares. You need to have them in your posession before you start marking/cutting. There really isnt a set standard or template that can be followed for cutting the fenders. For the race cars we remove as much as possible to save weight. We only leave on the tub what is needed to hold the flare on (Dzus fasteners or whatever).

I am currently working on fenders like Johns, and I think that if you just dont care about the look, and you have some tools, you can get an inch or more in about a night on all 4 fenders.. Or you could spend hours and get them to look good..

If I was to cut my fenders, I woudnt cut them as much as the green car was, I would cut the neccicary, and make small cuts so I can fold the fender slightly out or in so I wouldnt cut the tire if something happend..
