I have been told that there are modifications made to the windage tray that improve its performance. Does anyone have pictures or a procedure on how to do it?

Basically cut some of the material away so the oil can drop to the sump faster. Where you choose to cut is open to debate. I like drilling some 3/4" holes at various points (about 8 holes in all). Some people cut the 'fins' out of the center.
