OK,
Im thinking really hard about attending the Albaquerque shindig.
Here is the idea.
Im gonna build a super tall gear stack for the highway.
Im gonna bring the short stack in the trunk.
Swap it out once I get there....swap back for the ride home...
Am I high?
would it work?
If I go, you gotta get some more of the SOCAL contignent to go...

Do you mean with the intermitent plate, pinion gear, the whole shootin match?
In that case I don't see why not, a drip pan, gear oil and some tools.

Rich, what do you consider a super tall gearset . . . like with an H gear?

Why not just have a tall 5th in there? That's the only gear you'll use on the highway and you'll rarely use it on any track.

with an air cooled engine don't you want the RPM's up for cooling and best fuel milage? Can a 914 with stock gears run 70-90 MPH for a sustained period of time? If it ain't broke don't fix it. If anything just run a taller rear tire.

flipped H/HA/HB will be too tall for a type 4 im guessing....
lets say you run at 80 mph the whole way....
you are better off bringing a PAIR of uber tall tires for the rear....

Gonna swap out the ring gear too? (ring and pinion are a matched set!)

more like ring pinion and intermediate plate and case
sounds like he would carry a whole nother tranny to make it a simple swap

195/65's might look funny, but will get more more road covered per motor revolution (will throw the speedo off too)
"normal" wheels and tires in the trunk

I amend the taller rear tires suggestion. Otherwise, clear out the passenger's seat for stow-away room of that spare trans. Changing gearstacks at an event is not very fun, when you could either change the whole tranny in less time or swap rear tires in even less time.

I can change out the gearstack, provided it has the exact same matching numbers on the pinion gear as the one that comes out. Otherwise the ring and pinion is gonna howl like Miles' goat when she sees him unzipping!
I would suggest that you put in a tall 5th to use on the highway, and don't screw with it at the event!
