Full Version: Flag Mirrors for 914

While looking for some flag mirrors for my 914, it occured to me that the 944 flag mirrors look identical to the 911 flag mirrors. From photo's, the mounting surface seems slightly different between the two. Since the 911 requires a little massaging to the mounting suface to fit, can the 944 mirrors be made to fit the 914 as well?

944 and 928 mirrors although the same on top..have different bases that can't (or easily) be ground to fit the curve of the 914 door. The 911 bases are almost perfect (get it in the right spot and you don't have to do anything). However, make sure that you do get the internal metal plate that goes on the inside of the doors on a 911..this will give you structural stability....you have to use the 911 bases.

p.s. you can look at my blog to see pictures of 911 mirrors...I made NO modifications to the bases.

I just did a 944 mirror installation onto 911 bases. ThIf you go with the electric motors, which I did, you will need the 944 switches that go with the mirrors. There's a shop near me that has new 944 mirrors at a good price. PM me for number if interested

I'm putting the 911 flag mirrirs on mine. I already have the drivers' side on, and plan on the passenger side soon. You can use the 944 or 928, but you need to replace the base, GPR had some of the bases & plates in stock the last time I talked to Dave.

Speaking of electric mirrors, can they be adjusted manually by pushing on them (from the outside) if you don't hook up the electronics?

I used 911 mirrors on mine without the motors hooked up. You only need a slight push on the mirror to adjust.

I used early escort mirrors. Look like a 911 mirror, a bit smaller which I think fits the 914 better. They are electric and are about $5 each used. Check out my webshots to see them on the car.

I AM curious....why would you want to do this ? I own an 84 - 944 and when the two cars are sitting next to each other, and one tries to envision the look .....????? I fall short on the full appreciation factor. Granted, the teener mirror is more than a little hard to see out back with.......BUT there really is NO substitute for its beauty and charm. It lends itself well to the body lines of the car, is chrome, not monochromatic in color as the 10+ years of styling change have dictated, and they can be found to fit correctly without the monkey motion adaptability issues that come with a retrofit. Sorry.........am a little geeky in my preferences, but that's the way they made them at the factory, and if you look at all the mods made in the world to the poor little teeener, most really appear of a horsesh*t variety in fit and finish........just my 2 cents worth on a subject thats worth a little more in value than my proclamations.

If you do a search there is a very nice how-to somewhere... Perhaps in Classic Threads. It does look good on the car that it was done on... By the way... Are you and Roundhouse Rodney still hangin' out? Oh wait! That was Casey Jones... I actually had my birthday announced on one of those shows back in their day.

Mrgreenjeans, You are a great writer and a true purest. I did just that 25 years ago. I bought and never put them on as I thought they where too big. But if we look at this as an art form with design, people are building their own art with elements from the factory or putting different designers elements together. Marks V-8 is a great example with late wheels, 916 bumper (with a grill I have never seen) a small wing on the back? and the Escort mirrors, plus, plus. I do think the 911 flag mirror a little big but what I see in Marks car is a great looking car and in its own rite shows the mirror may be an improvement over the factory’s original. I believe I will keep my factory mirrors for now as I have questions how they fit on but please have the capacity to keep an open mind to modified cars. If everyone had the same 914s it would be boring.

Nope , don't hang out with those guys as I find I had a lot more in common with Mr Rabbit and Mr Moose. As for Grandfather Clock....that dude kinda creeped me out, and I always had a feeling he was a slap.gif for Captain Kangaroo. Said a lot of the same stromberg.gif , and I just got a little yawn.gif of it all.

And then I made the big switch from hanging around the fencepost and settled in on racing das weinig auto von das vaterland.......the rest is all driving.gif and smilie_pokal.gif !!!!! If only Mr Rabbit could see me now !!!!!

Oh, I can appreciate, its just that not everyone who thinks he is, really IS , a great designer with the god-given talent affordedto, and a talent to produce great looking cars.

waking up one morning and looking at that unshaven mug staring back at you in your mirror........and realizng blink.gif :

WAS that really me, back when the cars were but a few years old, armed with a sawzall-smiley.gif , doors propped open and remnants of door panel lying on the garage floor ? All in preparation of adding that latest model of Kraco stereo and speaker kit just purchased at Kame-a-Part for 49.99. (Wow: I wonder what ever became of that period correct , O.E. Blaupunkt ?)
Was that really me, augering in holes in that pristine decklid, so I could mount that piece of stromberg.gif , slightly askew, 79 dollar foam , fake tail that did really nothing but slow down an already underpowered car ? Instead of make it stick more to the track at speed......
WAS that really me that just last weekend, looked at my lovely little darling sitting there in the shadows, begging to be driven for the day, and instead entertained the thought of putting 18 inch Chrome wheels on, replacing those ultra light Fuchs, with a thing that weighed more than half my 2.0 motor alone?

There is nothing worse than buying a car from a DAPO, than waking up and finding out , there is someone out there today, trying to rectify an "improvement", I made after beer3.gif , and realizing I was once a DAPO too, ( only am not admitting this to a soul.)

The whole issue of styling is always in the eye of the beholder. Where you believe "there's no substitute...........", I prefer the flag mirror'd 914 over the stock offering. The key word here is "prefer." So when you ask "why would you want to do this ?" Now you know. The stock units are certainly more than ok, IMO.

What really matters is I like it, and I built it for a fraction of what it has cost others. At a few shows, people have gotten miffed when I tell them I have under 8K in the car.
What helps is that I am a real car designer, its what i do for a living, so I try to work best with what i have.

Back on topic....repeat....to use the flag mirrors all you really need is the 911 bases (don't forget the backing plate!).

Here is a bad angle picture of mine showing only the drivers side (excuse the ugly looking guy next to the car..lol)...I can dig more up if you want (pm me your email address). Also, if you search for a post on 911 mirrors and search using "jim912928" I had posted pictures with rough measurements from key points on each door.

p.s. I've seen Marks green car at one of the midwest classics (Mark..I had just finished mine and it was the first run for me). It's a gorgeous car and extremely well done.

What kind of automotive design are you involved in?

I did some work with MW Design on a couple of projects. I was the foam and f'glass guy. Oh, and a few machined parts as well.

Thanks Andys....914 colorized (I think it looks lower all one color), boxster rims, 911 front suspension, 911 mirrors....it's currently getting a 3.2l with motronic heart transplant...I love doing things my way!

I am an actal designer at DaimlerChrysler. I work in styling. I do the sketching and idea generating, not engineering. I am lead exterior designer on 08 Dakota, Future dakota/aspen, Nitro and heavy trucks as well as some other things. I also do some SEMA cars like the Aspen CSE and the Nitro Panel wagon. Some engineers or CAD workers are called designers but I do the actual styling.

I've always had a great deal of respect for the creative types that can actually apply their talent and be successful at a real job.

The guy (Mike) I was associated with on a few projects did work at then Chrysler, Pontiac division, and Jeep (some years ago) as a stylist. Magic just flowed from his pencil when we discussed concepts. I sure learned a lot just being around him; proportion, effects, surface development, and on and on. It was a great experience, though I lack greatly that kind of crative (artistic) skill. Interesting too was his breadth of knowlege and experience; space station interior design to submarines to race cars. Mike designed the bodywork for a championship winning CanAm car. He also taught an automotive design course at Art Center School in Pasadena. I built the fiberglass fisherman (Mike did the head sculpture) attacked by the shark in the original Jaws exhibit at Universal Studios....My only claim to (very minor) fame.

So kudos to your line of work. To be in such a competitive environment and work on successful project speaks well of you.
