Not always easy. I too am having trouble finding non galvanized sheet metal. My local hardware stores only have 22 Ga. Today I will try Ryerson. I hope they will sell small quanities. Ryerson is a large steel supplier.

I've bought several pieces of steel, tubing, etc from this company. Good service, easy ordering, delivery to your door:

They are in the DFW area. Give them a try.

Looks like metalsdepot.com was the best solution here. I didn't check on shipping. I asked a local steel broker here and received a quote of 395.00 for a 4 x 8 ft sheet. He insisted the quote is correct. Metalsdepot is about 70.00. I found a local guy that gave me enough for now. Lots of 22 and 16 ga. can be found but no 20 ga.

This is terrible, but I always look for scrap sheet at my local dump. I've gotten some really nice sheets of metal there for free. The biggest was about 3x6 feet, and it was folded twice, but its no big deal to fix that little stuff when you are saving the much money smile.gif

Thanks for the replies. I'll call the local shops and see how it goes.

Just a few comments on my unsuccessful past attempts to
find some 20g sheet. (It seemed like it should be so easy)

Lowes/Home Depots around here don't carry 20g.
Plenty of 18g and 22g but no 20g.

Google isn't too useful in this type of search as it gets WAY too many
hits for fabricators. Plus I was looking for actual local experience with a shop
that sells 20g sheet.

I have called several scrap yards around DFW but none seem to answer
their phones or return calls. I'm not sure why they bother to list their
phone #s.
These were shops/yards recommended by the local welding shops.

Anyway, thanks for the input.

I'll post a quick followup when I get the metal.

Hi Bill,

I used to be able to buy sheet metal from the local sheet metal fab shop. You might look around for one near you. The called cold rolled "black steel" for some reason. Another useful place for this kind of information is the forum at: www.metalmeet.com
You may be a able to find someone near you who has some small pieces available.

If you are filling small holes like trim holes of 1/4" or so, you can thicken up the 22 gage by pounding on the edge over a steel surface, or thin out the 18 gage by pounding it flat over a steel surface.

There is a metal place in Wylie, and they seem to have a lot of smaller pieces sitting out front. You might want to give them a call.

Body shops might be another place to check for small pieces....even wrecked car parts... just strip both sides.

Well,
Finally made it down to Metal Supermarket.
Nice little place. Ended up getting 8 sq ft of 20g, 2 sq ft of 16g
for my hell hole & firewall project and 8 sq ft 24 gauge galvanized for a
magnetic bulletin board project for the wife (she came along to the metal shop).
They even cut the metal to size with their HUGE sheer.

All this for $15. Not too bad.

Thanks for all the help.

Wow! that is a good price. The piece I got cost me a case of beer and it was only one piece about 3sq ft. Let's see, how many beers per sq inch is that....

Glad I could help. Those guys were real good to me also. I didn't really know what I wanted. They let me rummage around and gave me discounts on leftovers from full sheets.
