I'm looking for a local tail or side-shfit tranny.
It needs to be in one piece and spinning.
It also needs to be installed into a bus, the mounting is different involving mounts @ the bellhosuing.

Get yourself a early 911 901 trans. No need to flip the ring gear and more
condusive to a bus fit.

The shift rod would at least be pointed forward then (and the R&P are in the proper orientation).

and it has a mounting boss on the bottom....
fab up a bolt on hanger and you are good!
the shiftlinkage is easier yet!

Close enough, you may need to make an adapter for front, rear mounts and the
shift rod. But very little compaired to a 914 901.

this is a really intersting idea. How would the gearing be for the bus? Would you get better milage with 5th gear?

5th gear would be nice if you have the power to shift into that gear...
Then you need to remember the cooling depends on the RPM's.

Better watch those gear ratios if your bus is a bay window!
Lowering engine RPM is a BAD thing in a Bus application as that slows the cooling fan and increases load, both of which increase head temps!
The 901 will work fine in a Bus, I am slapping a 915 into my company Bus with a 2.2L Intercooled Turbo CIS injected MassIVe 4..
Just don't try to drop the operating RPM at highway speeds by much, the aerodynamics of a Bus coupled to it's weight need increased engine RPM and cooling system pressure to provide normal engine temperatures.
