I finally got the nerve to cut the sheet metal today so I suppose it
is official.

Been collecting parts for this for 5 years, and had not planned on using
this car, but it is a clean, pretty rust free car, and has special meaning to
me, so I actually took the plunge.

The 2.2 from JLO is out

Once you start you have to finish it! That a new LAW!! Good to see another one that will go fast. I remember when my car looked much like that, but it comes together fast. Keep us posted on the progress.

OK, as it IS the law, progress has (kinda sorta) been made

The engine is close to ready too

Since the car came sans wiring, I had to build a fuse panel and relay plate

Here's a test fit of the dash. I think I'll paint the metal part body colour (white)

Can anyone tell me what these are? I am not quite sure what they are
but from looking at them they probably are nothing I want/need
There was a tag on this that said LSD but I gave that stuff up LONG ago

and this came with it but none of the bits are like what I've been using

And here's a picture of Blue Cat for Scott. This car used to belong to James
(lapuwali). I traded it to him for his Honda cb-1 and then he gave it to my
wife a few years later. (so she ended up with the little blue bike AND the white
fiat) I borrowed it one day and got broadsided by a cadillac. The driver dropped
a "cigarette" in his lap and didn't notice the light had changed...

I think the closer trans is a 930 trans. If you don't want it I'll take it off your hands... biggrin.gif

Hehe, ya never know.

You'd know... IS that a 930?
Crazyhippy
It is... along w/ the clutch stuff, cable shifter attachment, trans mounting ears, clutch release arm etc...

It also has the speedo pick-up plug which makes me think it's had the machine work done to flip the ring gear... Ie. Mid engine friendly...

I got to see it in person when Patrick picked it up... i dont think it's for sale...
pffft
Here's what the gauges will look like, including Mark's 4 way.
He's gonna do the tach for me too. Most excellent work.

And of course a rennshifter from JWest. In 15 years of 914s, I was never
completely comfortable with what gear I was gonna get till I installed one
of these. (and the shift knob should cut 3.34 seconds at Thunderhill)

And here's a veiw out my garage window because one must keep the cars
happy, especially when they live on jackstands

Nice work ! It's cool to see 914 being built up. Thanks ! party.gif
jimkelly
are you gonna flare it, put five lug suspension on it, and run wide tires?

you need to find out if the 930 trans has already been flippedfor 914 use.

i'm keeping mine stock, 4 lug and skinny tires - see my blog pics.

skline
That is the 930 transmission from Doug's incredible car that was destroyed in a freak accident. It came out of a beautiful 914 conversion that had an all aluminum Donovan V8. The R&P are flipped already and I think he even got the calbe shifter and everything he needs to put that in. It was not a cheap bargain buy either but I know that Doug had a lot of money into that box.

Give them back to the MG owner next door. Believe me, he needs them more than you do. At least you are modifying. He just can't get the damn thing to run!

Right now I just want to make it run, 4 lug and 901.
Hoses are going in this weekend. And I still need to lengthen the shift rod.

When I go to the 930 it will be 5 lug. Got a set of AA flares but I am not sure
I want to cut this car up any more right now unsure.gif

Test fit the engine and 901 with renegade crossbar and tranny set back blocks. The only hangup seems to be the throttle cable where it comes
out of the firewall is fouling the waterpump belt. (alt on drivers side
and inner belt per Simpson setup). Pulled the engine back out and
messed with the cable housing out of the firewall.
If I put the drivers side as outer pulley I THINK it will foul the brake
balancer(?)

Getting closer, though.

Toast
Wow! Looking really sweet!

Good luck! Please keep us updated.

You going to paint it yellow after it's all done?

toast.gif
Crazyhippy
A lil creative tweak on the throttle outlet is sometimes needed. A short section of tube to fit over the outlet, and a philips screwdriver in the middle and tweak slightly (dont go crazy or you cant get the throttle end thru to change cables....)

As a worst case scenario, I just put in a new throttle cable tube on my V8 because I had similar issues with the location and I wasn't happy with the angle of the factory setup in relation to the serpentine belt. If you can get by with a minor tweak of the factory tube, that's obviously much easier.

It wasn't fun by any means, but if you are careful the end result is a cleaner, more direct path than the factory setup and throttle response is excellent.
pffft
I did exactly what BJ suggested, before reading his post. And accomplished exactly what he warned against.
I very carefully bent it, but when I tried to install the cable...... Bent it back to the best I could gain and still get the cable through.
Motor is going back in this weekend, so I'll find out then.
I may go ahead with the new cable run anyway...
Thanks everyone.
Toast, you sound like my wife. She won't let me repaint my yellow fiat, wants
to paint her 2007 diesel pickup yellow, and has been seen loitering around the
white car with yellow rattle cans.

patrick
LarryR
Sweet! I wish I was doing that right now! the tax man took away all my car money for a while so the 914 is sitting under a cover for a while...
Crazyhippy
It is possible to tweak it a bit after the cable is thru, but be very careful not to kink the tube.... Curse words will follow if you do.

Only real update today is that a pair of the mythical mueller/brad billet hubs
arrived .
Thanks Brad (if you happen to see this) and Mike, they is beeeuutiful! pray.gif

Been thinking about investing in an electric choke for the edelbrock, but I
probably will just install a choke knob down by the heater between the seats.

I'm thinking maybe a prancing horse on a yellow background for the grill?

The 2.2 from JLO is out

What is the scoop on the 2.2 motor? Is it for sale??? PM me
pffft
After driving it a month or so with 327, 930, M koni struts and brakes and
re-drilled 914 rotors on 911 hubs w/ 930 axles, I parked it and started the
winter renewal. First, I bought a gmpp shortblock and added AFR 180 heads,
had comp cams grind me a flat tappet hyd cam (230 236 w 490 lift). Still
messing with the dash, can't decide whether I prefer the cf Getty or the
stock dash. Got a cage and removable brace stiffeining kit from CFR and will
install them with the "GT" stiff kit. welder.gif
Installed poly bronze up front.
I've got a Holley mpfi intake and after I sort out the new motor with a carb
I'll see if I can make it work with megasquirt 2.
Mark sent me his first h2o heater setup and that will probably go in this weekend.

Misc thoughts after a whole bunch of tanks of gas:
Cable shifter works great
I am SO glad I spent the money on a strong drivetrain
The weight behind my shoulders is noticable
(this is 195s on 6.5 minilights all around)
It sure is fun having a FAST 914. My 2.4 cis six was quick, but the 327 is
fast. The 350 should be, well, faster. And the Al heads should save ~40 lbs.

happy gnu year!

Things have been a bit disorganized in the garage from hell lately.

I replaced the plastic front suspension bushings with polybronse and finally got my new motor together. GMPP shortblock with comp cam and afr heads.

I installed an engman kit (here's the cable shifter tower too)

To further stiffen it I reinforced the swingarm ears with some bits from Tangerine.

Looks to me like you're going to need to swap that 120MPH speedo for something more serious!!!
Dr. Roger
i think mine came with original 195/70 radials also.

ar15.gif i delaminated them after a few days....

AFR heads... look out. ;-) aktion035.gif Seriously, that 350 will put you at a rate of speed which requires 100% of your attention.
