Can you put axle stands on the front of the A arms without damaging anything?
Yes. If your A arms are recently painted, use rags so you won't scratch them.

I would use the part that bolts to the chassis, right up at the front of the arm. It should be stronger, and you can't bend the A-arm's tube there. (Yeah, very unlikely, I know.)
