Anyone know when the change was made?
Or better yet, does a 73 have the tail shift or a side shifter?
Thx

'73 and up are side shifters, '72 and down are tail shifters. Lots of tail shifters have been converted.
I think all of the 6's are side shifters.

the sixes 70-72 were all a modified tail shifter with unique parts to the four cylinder, and actually shifted quite nicely as compared to!

I changed all three shift rod bushings and the shift lever cup bushing today in my 914-6 (tail shifter) and boy what a difference. Between the new bushings and the shift rod adjustment between the seats it really shifts beautifully.

I agree about the bushings- I also had a car that had the Rennshift Short shift and it was nice- much can be debated about using the short shifter as it puts some additional load on the gear box- but new bushings make a HUGE difference.
