was it stored in that woods?

you should build a road there, at least a trail.... LOL

So let me get this straight

914 that is broken all the time
A bus that was saved from a field
and Land Rover Disco II

Do you enjoy punishing yourself? poke.gif
bd1308
914 runs great (wont start easily due to cold wetaher or dead battery), the bus is almost rust free (odd) and the LR is a discovery I (its a 97 with a 5 speed---apparently pretty rare)

I enjoy life, I just get frustrated with me screwing myself out of fixing my car and blowing money somwehere else.

I have put three transmissions in different Land Rover before on the ground no fun what so ever.

They do go anywhere as long as they start.

Don't get me wrong I drove a 78 Bus for year daily with a 1641 Type-1 in it there cool and fun kids really dig them they point and wave good time's

bd1308
i just want something bigger for cruising from home to work

the LR is my dad's--not mine, so I dont have to worry abotu it yet

Coy
There are a couple of busses that cruise around here all slammed and cleaned up with fresh paint and tires... I think they are totally cool! I don't know why I think German equipment is so damn cool but I do. Maybe it's just that my family had Volkswagons when I was young; I actually like the way aircooleds smell. I don't drive any of my stuff really really fast, but I love the way they feel any time you give them gas. Congratulations. clap56.gif

I like where your head is at on this one....always wanted a bus.
Mr.C
Here's my project that I'm finally getting motivated to finish. I hope to have it road worthy in the next 2 months.
John
Please don't tell us that you "found" it in that field. Tell us you have a proper title for it.
Aaron Cox
whats its vin? LOL john!
r_towle
Britt,
How about a load of detailed pictures??

How are the dog legs?
Does the side door operate smoothly?
How about the cantalevered edges of the frame under the main bed of the van...hard for me to decribe...but easy to find..they are the rusty parts..

Rich
bd1308
Rich, its closes smoother than *ANY* bus ive ever seen

I will take LOTS of pics!

Bill of Sale is all thats needed to get a title here in KY,

It was in that field, dogs legs are *****RUST FREE ******

can you imagine that?
r_towle
that is awesome.
they are great cars, I have had a few.
If you keep an eye on the engine temps (cyl head temps) and keep it in normal range, you will be fine.

Unfortunately due to people buying the busses to strip the transmission to throw in thier buggie, my bus has no engine or transmission.

If anyone has a connection to a 091 6-rub bus transmission, let me know.
r_towle
Check the samba, filter the ads for the northeast...

Lots of parts up here...no chassis's

I still am not sure: Did these later buses come with T4's or T1's?
markb
A 2.4 6 makes them go nicely. Check out the Thunderbus on my site. smile.gif

72 on had type 4s, Only in europe did you have the option of keeping a T1, but why would anyone do that to themself.

CB 1972-73 Bus, 1.7 liter, Dual carb, manual trans
CD 1973 Bus 1.7 liter, Dual carb, auto trans

Busdepot.com is much better for busses. Cheapest prices you will find anywhere on the net for T4 and bus stuff.
Congrats Britt, Those busses are a ton of fun. I'm selling mine, I bought it to fill the 914 void I got when I moved from KY, and now that the honeymoon is over. Gus the Americana Camper is no 914.IPB Image

bd1308
Im goign to buy a battery to start electrical troubleshooting then move to minor welding and cleanup
Bleyseng
BusDepot is ok but does have some good parts for good prices
GermanSupply in Canada has the hard to find stuff
GoWesty is not pro Bay Window anymore...

A bus is a nice change from a 914 esp in traffic. You sit high like all the SUV's biggrin.gif

The Camper Special motor means no one passes me anymore drunk.gif

My still shifts like a taishifter 914. dry.gif

Good for you--and not too tough a "save", if it's really clean. I lived in Boston from '72-91, always with a van. In '74 I drove the '66 splitty with a 40-horse (1300) to Guatamala and back (OK, most of the way back, had to have a friend--real friend--bring a motor to central PA when the rod threw through the case--a 28 hour delay). Still have a bus, if a Vanagon counts. Goes uphill, although I usually turn the AC compressor off for the long or steep ones. Gotta have one when it's time to carry something big, lots of kids, or a few sleepy people. And kids love a Westy--like a big playhouse.
bd1308
I'll take pics tomorrow...I need to find my charger for my camera........
bd1308
well an update:

*Camera Charger for old Sony camera gone
*Bus electricals are apparently 100%
*Its pretty hard (harder than I would think) to get crappy cell phone pics off the phone and on the computer
*Doglegs are perfect, footsteps only have surface rust, cargo/passenger area has rust in the front corners only, sunroof doesnt work
*sliding door track perfect, NO RUST
rick 918-S
Did you find a transmission? I may have one here.
bd1308
never did find a tranny or a transmission nearby for cheap--lemme know if you have a transmission.

Theres other places I need to visit before a transmission, which is why i havent went for the $450 rebuilt transmission.

I just saw this thread...which is too bad as there was a guy at the Chattanooga VW show last week that had a trailer full of bus trannies. I'd bet he'll be at the Sevierville TN show coming up as well.

I drove many (15+) VW busses in my youth with a '59 single cab later in life. One of the nicer ones was a '70 bay I bought from a VW mechanic. He'd replaced everything mechanical on it, including a 1600 DP with all new factory parts, balanced and blueprinted. It would cruise 70 no problem all day long. I traded it and a '62 sunroof bug for my first 914...which I blew up the engine in after only 3 months. slap.gif
bd1308
everybody wanted too much for the 091 transmissions.....

I did have my buddy get me a handle for my sunroof.

My source for 2.0 bus heads are gone, so i am building a 1.8 i think.

i have pics but i need to scan them and i lack a scanner
bd1308
cameras working, pictures coming soon!!!

smile.gif

Did some work today, found that my caliper is not good at all. First off, the wheel lugs nuts had to be tightened by either bigfoot or the hand of god, because it took a 12 ft 2 inch conduit cheater bar on a tire iron to loosen the lugs.

I'm assuming both calipers are totally done for, one definately is frozen

But i'm planning to rebuild these and put them back on.

New MC, new pads, shoes rear hardware, rubber lines, etc...

i'm making progress

Details? Like year smile.gif

Bay buses are going up in price

Here's my 72 before I customized the front end.......
jonferns
and what did it look like after you customized it??? biggrin.gif bye1.gif
bd1308
I know, I scored mine (without engine and transmission) for 400

Now that I have a working camera, I can now take pics. I hope to get some up today

I found out when flat towing a bus a special tow bar is needed. You can't use the standard one that bolts to the frame. The frame isn't strong enough for the bolts. You need one that goes to the front axel on buses. It wraps around the axel and has bolts that go over top. 6K damage

ah! the accidental customization! happy11.gif

haha...nice one thumb3d.gif
GWN7
It has zero rust...mint interior (same door handles/window winders as a 914, has a 1.7 T4) ...even has the snap on leather wraps on the heat exchangers, 90K miles, I'm the third owner

Insurance company offered me 4k for settlement (less deductable & salvage value). I told them to go pound sand. I had it appraised by a independent classic car appraiser, he said it was a #3 and worth $9200

Were going to arbitration.

Arbitration is when you can't agree on a value. You appoint a appraiser, they appoint one. If the two of them can not come to a value, a third is agreed upon and he decides the value.

Weld in a new nose! Cool bus and isn't welding your forte now? welder.gif

I scored my Westy for free and it came with a running engine and 091 tranny... chair.gif
GWN7
Can't do anything till the insurance is settled.

I can't use it till I can get it insured and I can't insure it till it passes a safety and it can't pass safey till it's repaired. Catch 22

I weld, in fact both boys can too so that's covered biggrin.gif

Replace the nose was one option from a body shop, the other was replace 1/2 the nose. The third was split the panel and repair it from the inside, then weld the front part of the panel back in place. The fourth was cut a access hole in the inner panel so the power ram can push the front back out.

Hey Britt...where's the pictures and the info? beerchug.gif
