Full Version: Trashed my engine!

Well, I took my car out to the track. Boy, was I bad!! I had no idea what I was
doing, couldn't find an apex, too fast into every corner, etc. What fun!! I've got to
do this again!

Unfortunately, I also trashed my engine. It was making some ominous noises,
but I tried to drive it home. I didn't make it. Oil pressure dropped and the noises
got too loud! I ended up getting a trailer and brought it home.

I've got an offer of a 1.7 for a good price. Is it hard to swap a D-Jet in place of my
1.8l L-Jet? Seems like there are some changes that make it tricky. The engine
comes with carbs as well, but I actually prefer FI, and I am quite certain I need to
change the fuel pump to go with carbs.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff, It is as simple as removing your old 1.8 and bolting in the new 1.7.

If the new engine is carb'd you will need a different fuel pump (much lower pressure than your current f.i. one and that is about it.

Converting it back to f.i is a different story, but quite easy nonetheless. The D-Jet is a very simple system with only a handful of components and a small harness. Hook it all up while it's out of the car and install the whole she-bang!

Also, run the 1.7 until it locks up hard, then remove spark plug #1.

On mine the electrode was sheared off, Garold took the engine to see hwo engines die and took pictures.

the carbed engine is a runner? if it is, get a rotary pump from cbperformance and install the engine.

If the 1.7 is carbed they may have also changed the cam. This could make going

with the FI problematic, if this is the case do as rhodyguy mentioned.

i was just fixing to edit with the cam thought. smile.gif i bought a totaled car with a running engine, put it in my car, and drove the daylight out of it for almost 4 years.

Thanks guys! I've been out photographing the engine compartment to
document the process. Looks easy from the top.

I do not know much about the engine except ithas about 3000 miles since
overhaul, andwas used by the current owner untl his race engine was
done. Good point about possiblecam changes.

I will try to find out more about it tomorrow.I want to keep my car running
as much as possible until I can rebuild the 1.8 into something more fun.
I'm also trying to find another transmission since mine does not have a
first gear synchro. Then I can replace the complete unit!

Any ideas what else to replace at the same time? I was thinking about
changing the clutch too. I just don't want to get too fancy right now!

if the cam is fairly tame, you can take off the carbs, bolt on the LJet intake, and the 1.7 will run fine on the existing FI.

IMHO:

1) T/O bearing
2) Pilot bearing
3) Clutch arm pivot

How are your(trans & rear engine) seals?
