Can anyone say , with some degree of certainty, how many different wrench sizes are needed to dismantle a STOCK 914?

I always joke that all you need is a 10mm and 13 mm socket and a couple of screwdrivers, but I do not know what the correct answer is.

just curious..........idea.gif
bd1308
me and a buddy went over this just the other day

8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 15mm, 17mm, 19mm, allen wrench (6mm) [CVs],

edit: I know this because I use all of these wrenches and only these wrenches (actually sockets) to undo everything in my car,...I have everything I need for a engine swap in a bag just in case.
TROJANMAN
You also use a 5mm allen on a few things (cone screws, floor board, etc) And the 6mm allen for CV's is not stock. It is not a true allen, it's a 12pt wink.gif

And we can add a 27mm to the list, for the steering wheel
markb
Aren't the nuts on the clutch adjuster 11mm?
KaptKaos
What about the tranny drain plugs? What size are those?
bd1308
so when I get to those items on another car, i'll cuss up a storm and go to a store to get those....

I fully realized my CV bolts arent stock, but cant recall ever getting a 5mm allen out for other things--actually my cone screws come out with a 4mm.

I figured we wouldnt need to get into the inside of the transmission to consider a 914 dismantled, so I didnt add that one in.

Are the rear shock bolts 22mm?
I use a VERY good Cresent wrench (Channel locks)for everything over 22,includes the steering nut.

I paint my 13's and 15's (red and green)
to find them faster.
All 13 wrenches and socket-red, 15's -green.
17 is next in line.Yellow?? laugh.gif
TROJANMAN
so far...............

7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 13mm, 15mm, 17mm, 19mm, 27mm

4,5,17 allens

plus a cv tool

17.5 MM for the blinker fluid reservoir.

8 mm allens for the front torsion bar covers...
Demick
30mm deep socket for the tranny stretch bolt. And a very large open end or box wrench for the mainshaft nut (dunno what size - bigger than what I have).

you forgot the 11mm for the clutch cable ... and the 27mm for the steering wheel ... and i remember having to use a 14mm somewhere as well ...

Aaron Cox
rear axle nut is 30mm.....

andy nailed the steering wheel nut at 27mm....

front 911 hubs use an allen on the spindle nut to pinch it. i want to say 8mm on that.... maybe not LOL

914nerd
For the rear axle nut though, a 1-3/16 will work nicely
And depending on where you are, they can be easier to find
Aaron Cox
a 1 1/16 works nicely on the steering wheel nut also smile.gif

what about the shock retaining nuts on the struts. requires channel locks or big old pliers.

baljoint and turbo tie rod tools are also required to complete dissasembly.

Jeffs9146
Alt/Fan belt Pully Nut? thumb3d.gif
904svo
12mm for rocker assy, and copper exhaust nuts.

14mm on the steering u-joint nuts.
904svo
7mm for the heater control cable nuts.

5 lb sledge hammer smash.gif
I could "dissasemble" most of my 914 with one beerchug.gif
I recently bought a wobble extension from Snap-On (I'm a sucker), one click and my 13mm socket can swivel 20-30deg, next click SOLID no wobble, and the surface of the extension is cross-hatched for quick manual twisting in tight spots. thumb3d.gif

I think the cap'n posted the definitive reply.
r_towle
Capn is right, but he likes to carry to many tools.

I would say.
One pair of quality channel locks, one philips and one regular screw driver, and a hammer.

I am sure with that I could take an entire 914 apart.

You guys don't use Flare wrenches on your brake lines?

11mm required in most places.

You also need a couple oddball spanner wrenches:

plastic nut for engine lid pull (also retains rear backpad)
Dashboard switch retaining nuts (a coin will also work on most (except the headlight switch)

Nobody commented on the ball joint nut tool

You also need a pair of pliers to bend cotter pins on both the rear stub axles and on the ball joint retaining washers.

The lower rear shock nuts are the same size as the steering wheel nut (27mm).

A good set of straight blade and Phillips screwdrivers are also required.

However a gas axe, or plasma cutter, or sawsall will make short work of the whole process.

I will edit inline cause I am lazy...
