My dead 1.8 has a serial number that begins with GD. Anybody
know what that means?

Thanks,

Jeff

Could you explain a little more? It's not a type 4 engine?
Lower hp? Buildable into anything good?

Thanks,

Jeff

What's a "GD" engine

That's what I call mine when it's acting up.

The D definitely stands for DAMN, I'm not sure about the "G" though?

I know. It was too easy. But somebody had to say it.

I think that the oil dipstick, and the oil filler/breather part of the case is different.
Saying that, Jake has a fairly simple way to modify it so it works in a 914 just fine.

Modification is to remove the bus dipstick tube, put a flat plate over the hole where it was and drill the hole in the top of the case for a 914 style dipstick tube, press it in and wella.

I believe that it also had the hole in front of the case for the fuel pump, depends

on the year I think.

"GD" is a 77 fuel injected bus motor, all 70hp and no fuel pump was mounted on em.

and it's been pushing a 4,500 pound rolling box down the road for 30 years.....

Don't expect to rebuild the heads and have the case inspected for wear before building it!

Thanks Jake!

I wish I knew when this engine was installed in the 914. The PO
didn't know it was a bus engine!

Toast already mentioned that the heads are probably no good. She's pretty
knowlegable!

I haven't started tearing it down yet. Peering through the sparkplug
holes and intake ports doesn't tell me much. There is a terrible grinding
noise as I rotate the engine now. I'll report more later.

This whole process is all new to me. My first engine drop, and my first swap.
I hope all goes well. I will need lots of help with the rebuild possibilities too,
assuming it is rebuildable!

I do have a 90hp GD version running in my bus where it belongs...

Guys,

Know the difference between quality and reliability?

Quality is works good, reliability is lasts long.

For all the bitching we do about the motor problems and the rust on these cars, show me a damn Honda still running after 30 years or a 30 year old Honda body that has less rust than a teener. Ebay says it all.
