What would you recommend for a leaking master cylinder?
If rebuilding, where can you get the seal kits?
Otherwise, 17mm replacement? 19?
What is the cheapest place to get a new one fast?

Thanks again,
Charles

It's your brakes! Replace it! All the usual sources. I prefer GPR. They're NOT cheap. I used to use 19mm 'caust they were cheaper, but I think they're about the same now, and it really doesn't matter that much. The Cap'n

Buy a new one. They are already one of the biggest PITA's to install so don't make it worse by trying to rebuild it.

And I agree, it's your brakes ya know.

They're not hard to rebuild, but I also agree that I'd buy a new one!

I realize you are in New Mexico and it is a little farther to the bumper of the car in front of you than here in California, but as others have said so eloquently "it's your brakes!"

Rebuilding is iffy, and it is a total pain to replace so why make a bet on rebuilding and have to do it twice?

While it would be nice to have a real choice to do the 17mm or the 19mm the fact is that the 19mm is much cheaper. Probably due to the fact that no one uses the 17mm?

I agree with GPR but you might check with Nate at 914Parts.com

Oh, by the way, if your master cylinder is leaking you might as well get yourself a pedal cluster rebuild bushing set as well. Brake fluid toasts your pedal cluster, especially if it has the original bushings.

With all the readily available and cheap VW master cylinders out there
surely there is one that would retrofit easily.
Isn't it more a matter of finding one with the proper orientation and spacing of
the bolt holes?

Perhaps one of the early 70's superbeetle/Ghia models?

Seems like worst case it would involve remaking the 2 short hardlines.
Best case, it might just bolt right in.

Anybody ever looked into this?

Already have the bushings (was going to do that anyways)
So, new seems to be the consensus
Where sells the 19s the cheapest?

Not practical/possible. The Cap'n

The captain is right. Take off that bellypan/cover plate by your steering rack and you'll see why. It would take a sawzall, welder and a shoehorn to fit anything larger than a 19mm master cylinder under there.

Look around and you should be able to purchase a 19 for about 120.00 new.

Where is a place to start looking for them in that price range?
The only places I have found so far seem to be in the ~$200+ price range.

My cover is off and I have looked many times. That's why I made the comment.
Can't see how bore diameter would have anything to do with it fitting.

The main concern is the distance from the mounting flange to the
end of the master cylinder.

Now if you guys are saying that most of the common master cylinders
out there are longer than what will fit (~5.5-6") then I'll buy that.

I still think there should be something out there that would fit
that is cheaper than the 17mm or 19mm parts being sold as drop
in replacements.

Granted, your discount at Worldpac (which doesn't sell retail unless you count Carquest) is probably better than mine, but they're telling me $187.50. I doubt you'll find anyone selling (to retail customers)
new 19mm 911 master cylinders (911 355 012 020) for anywhere near $132.00. At that price, I know a BUNCH of people who'd buy 2 or 3 or 10 in a heartbeat.

Hmmmmm.............. No answer. Well, THAT stopped the discussion in its tracks! And I thought a bunch of us were gonna get master cylinders real cheap!

That would be nice... But I doubt any vendor will sell straight for cost. :\

I like how George listed his cost, even though the original poster put AA's price as $185 laugh.gif

No problem for 30 at that price prepaid so we would not incur the charge fee! and they could be dropped to one location for free shipping!!!!!!!!
