I believe with they were first introducted they had 155's on them. And 165's were and option. I wouldn't go less than 175.

I believe that 155 SR-15 or 165 SR-15 were what the majority of 914's came with new.
Michelin XZX were a popular choice with the 165 SR-15.
I used 185/65 R-15 for a long time with 5.5" wide 4-lug Fuchs (195 & 205 would rub).
I have gone 5-lug now.

the 175 X 65 X 15 has substantially less sidewall than 165 rs 15 per
http://www.914world.com/specs/tirecalc.phpwhich would drop center of gravity some but would effect speedo and gear changes versus stock
i guess keeping speedo accurate is good and if i can get 3500 rpm in 4th or 5th at 63 mph would be ideal.
thanks guys

FYI.. we put 195/45 - 15s on Betty's car one time.
They were GREAT for autocross, but we would push soda cans around even when they were on their side. Speed bumps were brick walls as far as we were concerned, and we couldn't run 70 on the freeway without overheating the motor from too many RPMs.
I would not go any lower than 195/50 -15s without changing the 5th gear out to a taller one.

I'm thinking about a 155 or 165 as a spare to lower the floor of the trunk back to where it is supposed to be...

Could one of those minispares be adapted by changing the outer steel rim on the wheel to one that holds a mini spare? I remember that many people used to weld on different rims onto the VW centers back when, so the technique is out therre somewhere. It would be a nice way to get a spare that is small, doesn't need to be inflated, and would allow the trunkfloor to lay flat.

My '72 appearance group 914 came with 4 1/2 wheels & 155's. Dealer apologized (!) & put the right 5 1/2 inchers & 165 tires on. They (the tires) were correct. Skinny, but right for the time.
best i've ever had on the 914 were A008R's (195/60). Stuck like rubber cement & looked cool. Still have them (<1000 miles), but not on the 914.

The nice thing about the factory tires is you can use them to cut pizza if the need arises.
