What can I use to keep the gaskets snug on the tray while joining the case halves?

I didn't use anything on mine. I was afraid of something coming loose and plugging an oil passage.

Maybe a little grease?

FSM states high temp silicone.
I'm not so sure about that myself though.

I've never had to use anything. Definitely not something that will harden or impede removal at a later date.

Darn!!! The ends fray out, and might be a pain when joining halves. Maybe Curil K2??

used a nice glob of Vasoline at each end....worked great and the Vasoline will just break down to oil base once it heats up.

The ends of mine stuck out a little. I had an extra set of hands when I put the halves together which helped alot.
