I am sorry about all the questions. This is the first time for me changing an engine.
I put my new engine in the car today. Everything went well. I found that it was
easier to connect the transmission to its mounts first, and then the engine.

The only thing that seems strange is that the engine tin does not extend out to the
edges of the engine compartment. Is this a big problem? My previous engine had a
big hole on the front right side where the AC compressor had mounted. Also the
engine seems pretty tightly shrouded, so cooling should not be a problem.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Jeff

I think you're missing your engine tin seals. wink.gif I'll see if I can find a picture. thumb3d.gif

The engine tin seals are 2-3" long rubber seals that slide into tracks on the chassis side of the engine shelf...

Item #12 on this page is the back seal, there are 3 others (one on each side, and one across the firewall. Pelican parts link

I just take them out... They are too close to the heat from the turbo otherwise... And the radiator up front takes care of the cooling biggrin.gif

i think that with a stock engine, you're asking for trouble if the top is not correctly sealed from the bottom ...

shoot a pic and post it here and we'll be able to tell you what's wrong ...

Here are a couple of pictures of the gaps. Sorry, it is hard to shoot in
that dark engine compartment!

This is the left side. It looks to be a little under 1/2 inch.

Here is the right side. The gap is larger, about an inch. You can even
make out the front right corner of the engine tin!

There are virtually no gaps front and rear. I don't see how to stretch the
engine tin that much. Oh, the engine bar mounts appear to be pretty well
centered in their holes, and everything is tight.

I am going to continue the install. The previous engine was missing all the
tin on the front right side to allow for installation of the AC compressor.

Ideas are welcome. It sure looks weird, even if it would work!

Thanks,

Jeff

the shelve has been cut away/notched on the pass side for the fitment of the ac pump and related items. my silver car came the same way. you'll need to find someone parting out a tub to cut you the section that's missing. the drivers side looks about right. when you put in the tin seals (and drop the engine to do it), the seals have a little hook/lip on the bottom edge that goes over the bottom edge of the tin. when the egine is out, straighten out the edges of the tin to the original shape as best you can.
