Is that ring of twisted metal what is left of a thrust bearing? Does it ride on a brass washer? Just trying to make sense of what I found.

I bought this trans for use in converting a tailshifter. It was also locked up when I opened it. First gear ? was all the way toward the input shaft and another gear was apparently engaged as well. I popped the gear out to its middle position and the transmission now turns freely (with a gear engaged). It is really hard to move one (closest to reverse gear) of the shift rods out toward the end cover; it takes a lot more force than in the other direction or to move the other shift rods. I'll pull the stack this weekend. and look for a bent shift rod/fork.

But--any advice on the tail cover and the reverse shaft? The brass mess doesn't want to come off and I didn't expect to find it there. It's hard to tell from the parts diagram what is supposed to be there.
