NO GAS...On May 15th 2007

Don't pump gas on may 15th
...in April 1997, there was a 'gas out'
conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companys pockets
for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry
for at least one day.

If you agree (which I can't see why you wouldnt) ...resend this to all your
contact list. With it saying, ''Don't pump gas on May 15th'

I posted on my local craigslist, too.

Ummmmm....won't you still be driving and consuming the same amount of gas? Soooooo won't you have to get gas before or after 15th? Sooooo.....doesn't that equal no net loss to them?

the ultimate is to cut back, yes. 3 billion will possibly have cash flow hit for 1 day, even though those who dont cut back will pay before or after... it's at least a message for what thats worth.

The only way to make this really work, is to modify fuel consumption
going forward. Not just a day or a week, but going forward.
Short term influences such as this will at best only have short term price impacts.
In the grand scheme of a fiscal quarter or year, it will not impact
an oil companies balance sheet because everyone will still drive the
same amount of miles.

For me, I've already modified my consumption. I probably only fill
up every 2-3+ weeks.

All that being said,
on an inflation adjusted basis, gasoline is not more expensive than
it was decades ago.
And that doesn't even take into consideration that cars are more fuel
efficient than they were decades ago.

So in the grand picture, the cost per mile driven of gasoline, even
at $3.00+ per gallon, is still cheaper today than it was 30+ years ago.

To me, it isn't that gas has gotten so expensive, it is that people
have gotten used to its price relative to their incomes declining year after year
over the past several decades.

If anything, I believe that the cost of fuel is too cheap in this country.
It has encouraged and supported poor behaviors such as urban sprawl
and the resurgence of larger less fuel efficient vehicles.

In fact Texas is talking about temporarily waiving the gasoline tax in
an attempt to push down gasoline prices.
My personal feeling on this is that it won't work and will only cause
tax payer shortfalls elsewhere in the overall state budget.

The real answer is drive less, or drive a more fuel efficient car.
Or you could even do something as simple as drive 5 mph slower on
the interstate and change nothing else. Even that small change will reduce fuel
consumption.

Just want to give you something to think about. Before you pick on "Big Oil" think about taxes on a gallon of gas!! If I remember correctly big oil makes about .15 to .18 cents profit on a gallon of gas. Distributor's (gas stataion) about .2 cent profit on a gallon and when you total up all cost & profits it comes to just over a dollar a gallon. Now where is the other 2-dollars in the cost struture?? It's taxes to the state & federal govt. You got your priority's wrong, it's not big oil it's the taxes to government on a gallon of gas. Ask your liberal Senator & Governor for a discount on taxes!!!!

BTW: I may be a little off on my figures, but you get the drift.

actually the taxes were lowered last year after katrina and have not gone back up, the last increase on taxes brought them to an average of .75 a gallon which was dropped back to .49 per gal IIRC. this doesn't count state and city taxes, you cali guys are being hit for another .30 per gallon I believe. the filling stations are making about .2-.4cents per gallon, figure .15 cents per for transport and the cost of refining at about .10 cents per, we're still getting hosed.

You numbers are WAY off.

While it seems to be very common lately for people to make decimal point
mistakes when quoting dollars vs cents. It doesn't help in discussions.
.15 cents, .18 cents, and .2 cents are TINY numbers

I believe you meant:
.15 Dollars (15 cents) and .18 Dollars (18 cents)
not sure if you meant .2 dollars (20 cents) or .02 dollars (2 cents)


BTW the Federal tax right now is about 18.4 cents per gallon
and many states run between 8-32 cents per gallon so its not the taxes
that are the remainder of the cost.

Its other things like the actual price of oil and its refining that make up the
bulk of the cost. (And there is profit being made on those as well)

I was quoting costs, etc. on (1) gallon of gas (not barrel) from memory. I can't remember the cost for refining?? I'll do a little research on these #'s.

I was mainly just busting your chops for the .18 cents vs 18 cents
stuff since .18 cents is less than 1 penny and 18 cents is what you meant.
Just a pet peeve of mine. Nothing personal.
Seems to be a quite common mistake these days, including in several
of the posts in this thread.

The best I've seen/heard was a 30 minute phone call recording where
a guy in Canada had a cell phone bill dispute and was trying to explain
to multiple people in the billing department the difference between
.02 cents and 2 cents. Even after 30 minutes they never picked up
that .02 cents is 100 times smaller than 2 cents.

This math assumes that every man, woman, and child with internet access fill up with $30 to $50 of gas every single day. Not even remotely true.

I agree with bperry, better to change consumption habits over all, which would include not buying vehicles that use so much gas. Why should those responsible for the gas prices lower them when Americans are obviously willing to pay for it? Where's the insentive? We'd be better served as a nation to lower our consumption, if nothing else it would give nations one less thing to fight over.

People complain about paying $3.00 for a gallon of gasoline, but will happily pay $3 or more for a 12oz latte at Starbucks.

Most bottled water, nevermind the expensive brands, sells for far more than gasoline ..................... The Cap'n
