In November the office I work in will be closed. The company is wanting me to relocate.... to the Chino, CA. Vicinity.

Sooo... tell me about living in that area. I have been there twice, but never for more than a week.

We probably won't move out there, we like it here. But if the money is right..........

I remember Chino as cow shit smell. When I was a kid it was all dairies, but now it's all houses, traffic, and smog.

Clay,

I'm certain you'll be innundated by reponses from this. I'll only give you my take, from having it done to me twice. Ah, hell, why mess with the details.....

Turned down one from Cincinnati to SF in the late 80's. Good thing too. Real estate prices were crazy & couldn't afford it. Wanted to, just couldn't afford it.

Again, in the mid-90's, the offer came to move east. Didn't really want to do it, but this time they made the price right. So, 12 years later I'm sitting outside Philly, with house equity I never dreamed of.

But......and this is important to us. We never had kids. But we do have lotsa nephew/nieces & the grand variety. Unfortunately, we're 600 miles from them. They are groing/grown & we haven't been there to see it.

Oh. did I mention - the corporate office shut down (where I'd been transferred to) in 2001! Gave me 2 years severance (nice) and a 2 year additional consulting gig (also nice).

But now we're here in the Philly area. Guess what? We like it here, though we won't stay. Taxes are out the roof!

So, my point would be - take your chances, or not on a relocation. From what I gather, you're not looking at a major relocation. But.....you'll miss a lot of family gatherings. That may be important.

Bottom line to my story is - though I have profitted significantly from my relocaton, I wouldn't do it again. I've missed a lot!

Nothing has been decided. I have a meeting with HR tomorrow to discuss this. I just got the news today that the office was closing, and a personal message to me that they were wanting me to move with it.

I have been to Chino on business, and it was OK. I was trying to get info on the places to move if we go, and the cost of living out there. How much am I going to lose in the housing market, how much more am I going to have to earn to have the same standard of living, etc.....

If it does come to pass, at least there will be some 914 people around.
ahdoman
Clay,
While Chino is not the prime real estate of SoCal it is central to everything and it's not the barrios. There are some great spots to live in the area. Lots of new development and good neighborhoods. Anytime you relocate to California you're going to loose against the housing market so make sure you get a cost of living increase. The average home price in the area is about 550k to 600 for a nice place. But, there is a great community of 914 people out here. Traffic, yes. But, if you live close to the office it's not so bad.
effutuo101
agree.gif Make sure the $$$,$$$ is worth it, because $$,$$$ might not cut it if you have any habits other than sitting at home and paying for the AC to be on. I miss Califiornia, but until I have a lot more money in the bank, or a position that will afford me to move back, it will be a few more years.

Your sure that it is Chino and not Chico right? The cow crap description is more on the Chico than Chino end of the scale.
I would describe Chico for you but you couldn't drag me close enough to that crap hole to take a peek... biggrin.gif
bernbomb914
Chino had the largest population of cows in the world But the land became to valuable and a lot of the cows have moved away. There are a lot of new homes under $500.000 within 1 hour of Chino to choose from. contact me if you need more info about the area.

chino hills is a very nice hood to live in..... (where your hotel was at)

Chino or Chino Hills?

There's a lot of nice neighborhoods in Chino Hills. My friend just moved from there to be closer to his work in Agora Hills (yes, that was a commute). I thought the neighbohood he was in was nice. It was a bit cramped but that's the new Cali way... he was backed against a nice horse ranch.

Clayton can weigh in. I think he shoots out that way often.

im 5 miles from chino hills........

its very nice.

Los Osos is San Luis Obispo ..... quite a commute to LA ..... The only thing in Los Osos is old hippies and college students. Population of SLO used to double when Cal Poly - SLO was in session.

Montana De Oro was a good place to drop acid and watch the Sun set or rise.

yeah I wouldn't give up living in KY for anything, the scenery is beautiful (not from my window but around western part of KY is gorgeous)

Working in Chino ain't bad - although I probably wouldn't live there. I work a couple of cities north of there, in Claremont. I live in Rancho Cucamonga and my "commute" is about 15-20 minutes from about 10 miles away (depending if I have to drop the kids off or not). $500k can buy a decent home in my neck of the woods, and you wouldn't have too much of a drive. It gets warm, not much rain (or humidity), you've got mountains/beaches/deserts/lakes within 1-2 hours away. Smog exists in just about any metro area unless you live near the beach, and that means double the housing cost blink.gif . Amenities are plentiful. The bottom line - it's crowded here because the weather's pretty damn awesome most of the year, period. If you like 4 real seasons or a cooler climate then don't come. But if you enjoy driving your teener with the top off 9-10 months a year, come on down! driving.gif

my area was semi-rural until a blitzkrieg of bulldozers blew through and left swaths of tracts and gridlock in their wake. Look out - they're coming your way.
Cap'n Krusty
The good thing, housing pricewise, is Chino is close to the epicenter of the mortgage default capital of the west coast. "Come on down folks, we're practically given'em away!"

As for "a blitzkrieg of bulldozers", I OPERATED some of them near the start of the So Cal housing boom! Yeee Haaaaaaah! Then I moved away ............... The Cap'n

2 words "Diamond Bar"

Parts of Diamond Bar are really nice. Gotta watch out for expansive soil. Brush up on yer defensive driving too - we got a wicked freeway interchange there, and if you believe in stereotypes, there's a pretty large Asian population in that area (personally, I've never been involved in an accident with someone from Asian descent, and I spent my early driving years living in Garden Grove - but there you go). Also, consider a $100k+ increase in home pricing over moving out into the 'inland empire'.

Any word on the move?
Aaron Cox
diamond bar has very nice parts.... as does la verne..... and chino hills......

Not much else nice until you hit corona/anaheim hills/orange county (toward the SW.... and not much nice stuff east of chino hills..... and not really anything nice west of chino hills either......

how long of a commute could you tolerate? 25 min?
andys
Home sales are pretty sluggish at the moment, so there may be a few deals out there (foreclosures, etc); though that's relative to a SoCal perspective. Comming from out of state will still be sticker shock.

Leaving Tejas and moving to ANY civilized part of the nation will be a shock.
