I couldn't beat the price I got for a 870 Cranking Amp Yellow top for the Vette.
http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?View...&sort=3&rows=50Auction just close a few days ago and I received it today. Looks great. Best local price for the high number Yellow top with side posts was $185 and tax, this one was $141 to my door.
Excellent service; many times Ebay rocks. I fully recommend these guys.
I bought a Red Top for the Vette now knowing they are notorious for demanding a lot from a battery (I know that know after searching the Vette forum). It's only 5 months old, and is still good, just doesn't like turning over that car. If anybody locally is interested in a great deal, let me know. I don't have anything else that needs a battery now...

Love those OPTIMA batteries. Went to a swap meet a month ago, and an OPTIMA dealer was there with there display. I spoke with the sales person, he told me that they get "blems" in stock from time to time and they can be purchased for $50.00 each.
So I went over to there store and sure enough $50.00 for a factory blem, last one, The red top was not colored evenly, so they could not sell it at COSTCO or wherever they sell.
Check with your local OPTIMA dealer.

I purchased one from the same folks (as malmz). I purchased from their web page vs from ebay. It was a bit cheaper that way, not much but a little.

I'm not much help on the proper one for a stock 914, I run a 570 CA Yellow top in my front trunk to turn over my 914 V8. BTW, starts every time even if it sits for months and that's turning the V8 but with an underdrive starter.

I would go with a 34 type and lie it down on its side. It fits perfect that way. Use the 34R if you want it standing up, which doesnt fit perfect. Pepboys has the 34 type for $99.00

how does one hold down the battery that is laying on its side? bungie cord? another use for duct tape?

I used a rubber strap with a metal hook on each end. I attached it from under the tray, up and over the battery, and then onto the area where the cpu is held. The battery fit is so well on it's side, that the battery won't move much with or without the strap. I also used a battery acid mat on the bottom as a buffer for the plastic casing. I have a 34R. In hindsite I would of bought the 34.

white car had a 34 in it. I put a 34R in it. I like the regular 34 better.

Do the Optima's weight the same/more/less than your standard Dihard or FLAPS battery???
I'm been looking at the Odyssey racing batteries that are 15.7 lbs for $137.00. Or the street model that 26 lbs for $159.00. Elephant Racing sells these.

They weigh the same as a stock battery. I've never heard problems with Optimas, but I have head of people with problems with Odysseys. No first hand knowedge though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I took my FLAPS battery out and weighed it.
It's 29 pounds- don't think I need to spend $159 to save three pounds.
