OK, here's another way to put in the photo:

Damn, that was one MESSY engine compartment. My favorite are the two little horizontal "eyebrows" of corrosion above the two sets of battery caps. Turns out the voltage regulator was cranking over 14 and cooking the acid. Here's the "after picture" again.
