i am ready to install new vinyl on my sails.
what should i use to glue them on?
any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

We use a 3M trim adhesive that works well. Comes in a big fat tall spray paint like can.

That is it. Works well. Read the instructions. The car looks nice.

Ditto on reading the instructions. Use liberally as well.

Don't be afraid to apply a liberal coat, and make certain that every inch is covered.

Be CAREFUL with over spray on new paint. I had some of that run down into my door jamb and it pretty much munched whatever the paint where it touched.

I've looked at this question since it was posted,and I have to let
you know what I think. I do not want to affend anyone but I'll take the chance.
I've done upholstery for over twenty years.
I will only use 3M glue if I do not want it to stick. The glue I use can be
purchased at Keyston Brothers , Its ADH105P.
I think you can get it in a quart. It can be put in a paint gun and sprayed.
it is a thick fluid so it can not be faned through the gun ,you need to control it by how you hold the gun.
The wax paper is a good idea. If you try this glue coat both sides evenly , let them dry past the tacky stage to where you can put your sail panel in place.
It should not stick but hold itself in place. Pull it up half way from the bottom,
with a hair drier on high heat up both surfaces then carefully rub that lower half down, then repeat the procedure on the top half.
The problem I run into with 3M is it will turn back to a gummy state when it
is out in the sun. Once again I really don't want to affend anyone.

a couple more questions though.
the sail penels are painted and clear coated like the rest
of the car. does this matter? (re: rustywa's coment).
should the sail panel and the vinyl be coated with the glue? (the instructions on the can say yes)
how far down should the vinyl go?
just above the holes or over the holes?
i asume the wax paper is so that you can position the vinyl
and work with it.
obviously there was no vinyl on the car when i got it.
new vinyl came with car and i purchased new chrome trim.

The clear coat won't matter, just put the adhesive right on it.
Yes you have to put it on both sides. It is a type of contact cement.
Put it on evenly, if you overlap too much glue in some spots it will show up through the vinyl.
Put the vinyl flush with the center of the holes and then work your way up from there covering the whole sail panel and wrapping it around the sides. Extra can be trimed off at this point. Better this than to be a bit short.
I like the wax paper idea, just wished I known about it 6 months ago.
I like the caulking idea too, I think I will do that.

3M Stoneguard looks great instead of vinyl, I like the top and sail panels covered in convertible materials also.
